What the future holds for Atlanta Falcons edge rusher James Pearce Jr. is uncertain. At this point, though, it’s looking bleak.
Pearce was arrested Feb. 8 in Doral, Florida, on five felony charges, including battery with a deadly weapon, aggravated stalking and aggravated battery of a law enforcement officer. He was later released from the Turner Guilford Knight Correctional Center on a $20,500 bond.
According to ESPN’s Marc Raimondi, Pearce allegedly intentionally crashed his Lamborghini into his ex-girlfriend Rickea Jackson’s vehicle multiple times in an attempt to prevent her from reaching the Doral Police Department. Jackson, who plays for the Los Angeles Sparks, reportedly noticed Pearce was following her. When she stopped at a red light, Pearce allegedly exited his vehicle and attempted to open her driver’s side door.
“Doral police officers responded to the scene after Jackson called. According to the affidavit, they saw Pearce standing on the outside of his SUV on the driver’s side with the door open. An officer pulled a gun on Pearce and ordered him to get on the floor. Pearce got back in his car and closed the door. The officer opened the door, but Pearce shut it again, locked it and drove away.
“While Pearce was driving away, the SUV struck an officer in his left knee.”
The incident later continued on foot after Pearce crashed at an intersection. He allegedly fled before officers caught up with him, at which point authorities say he resisted arrest.

James Pearce Jr.’s Potential Jail Time
How this ultimately unfolds remains unknown, but the legal consequences could be severe for the 22-year-old.
According to Fox Sports South Florida’s Andy Slater, Pearce could face significant prison time if convicted.
“Pearce Jr. faces a minimum of five years in prison if he’s ultimately convicted of one of the charges against him. Aggravated battery on a law enforcement officer in Florida is a first-degree felony and has a mandatory sentence,” Slater reported.
That five-year term represents the minimum for that specific charge. His other felony charges could carry sentences ranging up to 30 years or more under Florida law, depending on how the case proceeds.

Even beyond the legal ramifications, Pearce’s football future is now in serious doubt.
If he avoids extensive jail time, the next question becomes what the NFL — and the Falcons — decide to do.
From a contract standpoint, Atlanta at least has some flexibility.
“Falcons ED James Pearce Jr. has 3 years, $7M fully guaranteed remaining on his rookie contract, plus a 5th-year option available for 2029. Per terms of his contract, a suspension would automatically void the remaining salary guarantee,” according to Spotrac.
That may soften the financial blow for the organization. But it doesn’t change the larger issue: Atlanta could be facing the loss of a former first-round pick with little to show for it long-term.
It’s also worth remembering how Pearce arrived in Atlanta. Under the previous regime of general manager Terry Fontenot and head coach Raheem Morris, the Falcons traded their 2026 first-round pick to the Los Angeles Rams to move back into the first round and select Pearce at No. 26 overall.
At the time, it was viewed as a gamble. Then Pearce delivered, posting 10.5 sacks as a rookie and emerging as one of the breakout defensive players of the 2025 season.
Now, the gamble looks far more complicated — and the Falcons are left waiting to see just how costly it may become.
