The Philadelphia Eagles and quarterback Jalen Hurts are hoping to make a push back to the Super Bowl next season. After making the playoffs, winning the NFC East, and being eliminated at home in the Wild Card round, the team is hungry to get back on track.

One of the big storylines surrounding the Eagles this offseason has had to do with the future of star wide receiver A.J. Brown.

Entering the offseason, Philadelphia was widely expected to trade Brown. While Howie Roseman and the front office have had quite a few trade conversations about the wideout, no deal has materialized. He remains on the roster.

That being said, the Eagles reportedly attempted to bring in a new weapon for Hurts who could have helped replace the loss of Brown should they choose to trade him.

According to a report from ESPN NFL insider Jeremy Fowler, Philadelphia was involved in discussions for free agent wide receiver Darnell Mooney. He ended up signing with the NFC East rival New York Giants instead.

“Giants OC Matt Nagy was a factor. Mooney maintained a good relationship with Nagy from their Chicago days,” Fowler wrote. “Eagles also were involved.”

Darnell Mooney Would Have Been a Nice Addition for the Eagles’ Offense

Throughout the course of the 2025 NFL season with the Atlanta Falcons, the 28-year-old wide receiver played in 15 games. He caught 32 passes for 443 yards and a touchdown.

Mooney didn’t have a big role with the Falcons last season. However, he had a much bigger part in the offense back in 2024.

In that season, he played in 16 games for Atlanta. Mooney ended up catching 64 passes for 992 yards and five scores.

While Mooney wouldn’t be able to replace Brown by himself, he could have been part of the equation. The Eagles pursuing him could have had something to do with the trade discussions surrounding Brown this offseason.

Where Do Things Stand Between the Eagles and A.J. Brown?

The Athletic has reported that both the Los Angeles Rams and New England Patriots remain interested in trading for Brown. Those talks could intensify closer to June 1.

“Both teams in recent weeks discussed trading for Brown, whose frustrations in Philadelphia were a running subplot of the Eagles’ 2025 season,” the report read.

“While the Rams and Patriots remain interested, no move is imminent. If a trade were to happen, league sources say it would likely heat up closer to June 1.”

If Philadelphia is going to trade Brown away, Roseman will need to add playmakers for Hurts. Simply moving on from Brown without any kind of replacement would be a big step in the right direction on the offensive side of the football.

Expect to continue hearing rumors surrounding the Eagles. Mooney was clearly a target, but there are still a few other options the team could consider in free agency.
