Should the Canucks consider taking on Kings forward Warren Foegele's contract?

There is no question that the 2025-26 season has been a nightmare for the Vancouver Canucks. At the Olympic break, the Canucks are currently at the bottom of the NHL standings with an 18-33-6 record and 42 points. This is after they entered the campaign with the hope of bouncing back from their underwhelming 2024-25 season.

Due to how poorly the Canucks have played this season, they have already made some notable trades. They most notably traded superstar defenseman Quinn Hughes to the Minnesota Wild back in December. They also traded forward Kiefer Sherwood to the San Jose Sharks, so there is no question that the Canucks are open for business.

Yet, while the Canucks are clear sellers, they should also be open to the idea of adding to their roster if a player could help them beyond this season and could get them a sweetener in the process. One specific trade candidate who could do just that is Los Angeles Kings forward Warren Foegele.

Due to this, we here at Heavy Sports have a trade pitch that would have the Canucks taking on Foegele’s contract in a low-risk move that would also net them another draft pick.

Canucks Get:

  • Warren Foegele
  • 2026 Fourth-Round Pick

Kings Get:

  • 2027 Sixth-Round Pick

Foegele Viewed as Potential Trade Fit for Canucks

In a recent article for The Athletic, Harman Dayal and Thomas Drance took a look at five struggling players who the Canucks should consider taking a chance on. Foegele was among the players discussed by Dayal and Drance as a potential fit for Vancouver.

“The speedy, aggressive forechecking forward also has a stellar defensive profile and is an experienced penalty killer. He’s signed through next season at a $3.5 million cap hit, which means a team like the Canucks could rebuild his value and sell him at next year’s deadline as a rental,” Dayal and Drance wrote.

With the Canucks currently being at the bottom of the NHL standings, there would be no real risk in them taking a chance on a player like Foegele. While the 6-foot-2 winger has recorded just six goals and eight points in 43 games this season for the Kings, his recent seasons show that he has the potential to turn things around.

For example, just last season for Los Angeles, Foegele set career highs with 24 goals, 22 assists, and 46 points in 82 games. This is after he had 20 goals and 41 points in 82 games for the Edmonton Oilers in 2023-24. With this, it could make a lot of sense for the Canucks to take a flier on him.

Foegele Could Be a Great Fit on the Canucks

While things are not working out for Foegele on the Kings, it is fair to argue that he could benefit from a trade to the Canucks. When looking at the Canucks’ current forward group, Foegele would slot nicely in their top nine. In addition, due to his solid two-way play, he would give the Canucks another option for both their power play and penalty kill if acquired.

Ultimately, with the Canucks being in such a tough spot, they are in a position to take a chance on a two-time 20-goal scorer like Foegele. It will be interesting to see if they end up pursuing him from here.
