Over 40,000 Tickets Sold For UFC 129 On First Day

Mixed martial arts fans in Toronto are ready for UFC 129 to hit the city in April.

Over 40,000 tickets were sold in the first three hours of UFC Fight Club pre-sales for the April 30 event. Tickets have yet to be made available to the public, and they’re already nearing a sellout for the current seating configuration.

The current ticket sales far surpass the North American attendance record for mixed martial arts, which stands at 23,152 for UFC 124 in Montreal.

Sources close to the promotion told Heavy.com on Thursday afternoon that more seats will be made available to the public, but that the promotion will not utilize the full capacity of the stadium, which holds approximately 69,000 people when formatted for pro wrestling events.

The event is expected to pull in over $8 million at the gate, which would be the largest North American gate for MMA.

UFC 129 is headlined by a welterweight title match between Georges St. Pierre and Jake Shields. Jose Aldo also defends his new UFC featherweight title against local Mark Hominick, while Randy Couture battles Lyoto Machida.
