UFC Rio: Griffin/Rua, Two Other Bouts Announced

The UFC’s return to Brazil is getting more and more packed with each passing day.

UFC officials announced three more bouts for the “UFC: Rio” card over the weekend, including a previously-reported light heavyweight contest between Forrest Griffin and Mauricio “Shogun” Rua.

In addition to the Griffin/Rua news, officials also announced a light heavyweight bout between Luiz Cane and Stanislav Nedkov and a lightweight clash between Spencer Fisher and Thiago Tavares.

Rua’s last bout came in March, when he was soundly defeated by Jon Jones for the UFC light heavyweight title. Griffin defeated Rich Franklin by unanimous decision in February. Griffin defeated an ailing Rua by rear naked choke back at UFC 76 in 2007. Rua went on a tear after the loss, eventually capturing the UFC light heavyweight title from Lyoto Machida, while Griffin scored a win over Quinton Jackson to capture the title as well.

Cane will be looking to build on a resounding victory over Eliot Marshall in March. Nedkov will attempt to make his UFC debut for the third time after false starts against Rodney Wallace and Steve Cantwell.
