1. He Will be Taking Time Off From Swimming to Attend a ‘Program’

After his second DUI, Phelps said in some tweets, he will “take some time away to attend a program that will provide the help I need to better understand myself” which you can also read below. Stating swimming is a large part of his life, but he needs to focus on himself as an individual.


2. Phelps was Recently Arrested for a DUI

Phelps was recently arrested for doing 84 mph in a 45 mph zone in a tunnel and was two times over the legal blood alcohol limit in Maryland. He was stopped in his white 2014 Land Rover on the southbound Interstate 395 at 1:40 a.m.

Phelps currently has a November 1st court date, where he could face up to one year in jail, a $1,000 fine and could lose his driver’s license for six months.


3. He was Arrested at 19 for another DUI

In 2004, Phelps was arrested for his first DUI, pleading guilty and sentenced to 18 months probation, while also issuing a public apology. This came after the 2004 Olympics, where he won six gold medals and two bronze medals. This DUI was also in Maryland.


4. Five Years After His DUI, His Infamous Bong Photos Surfaced

Following his first arrest, photos of Phelps smoking marijuana from a bong surfaced. This was after the 2008 Olympics, where he won eight gold medals and was photographed from a party at the University of South Carolina.

Phelps was suspended for three months from swimming and dropped by several sponsors following the photos.


5. Phelps Has the Most Olympic Medals in Olympic History

After the 2008 Olympics and winning his eight gold medals, Phelps was able to break Mark Spitz’ record of the most gold medals in a single Olympic game and for the most medals of all time with 22.

Phelps has a total of 18 Gold, 2 Silver, 2 Bronze medals.
