As 64 of the best golfers in the world go head-to-head in the unique WGC-Dell Match Play tournament at Austin Country Club this week, there will be $9.75 million on the line.
For the uninitiated, the tournament is a bracket-style format. Golfers begin in 16 different groups of four, and after playing three matches in a round-robin format, the winner of each quartet advances to the Round of 16, where play continues with a single-elimination tournament until a champion is determined on Sunday afternoon.
Players who advance to the Round of 16 will be guaranteed $158,000. If they advance to the quarterfinals, they’ll get at least $298,000. Winning another match and getting to the semifinals nets them at least $545,000. Finally, in the championship match, the winner will receive $1.66 million, while the runner-up takes home $1.045 million.
Throw in the fact that players on the fringe of the Top 50 are attempting to qualify for the Masters in a couple weeks, and this is some high-stakes golf.
