Alabama football head coach Kalen DeBoer has plenty of reasons to believe in his Crimson Tide, but Saturday’s loss to Georgia has introduced a question that nobody inside the program can confidently answer just yet. How will Alabama respond when things aren’t going its way?
For much of the season, DeBoer has been able to evaluate his team through the lens of winning football. However, losing to Georgia has created an entirely different challenge, one that could ultimately reveal more about Alabama’s identity than anything it accomplished while undefeated.
Speaking during an interview with FOX College Sports, DeBoer acknowledged that although he remains confident in his players, their response to adversity is something he still needs to see.
“Just talking to the team, I’m confident,” DeBoer said. “It will yet to be seen what that response looks like, not just for him, but our entire football team.”
Alabama’s Kalen DeBoer Faces Important Test Following Georgia Defeat
What stood out about DeBoer’s comments was not necessarily his confidence. Any head coach should believe his players are capable of responding to a difficult loss. It was his willingness to acknowledge that Alabama has not actually proven it can handle this particular situation.
“This will certainly be where the character of our team gets tested,” DeBoer said. “We have said up until this point we feel really good about what the team looks like, but we were undefeated too.”
That is an important distinction. Winning can make everything feel like it is moving in the right direction. Players buy into the message, confidence builds, and even the occasional mistake becomes easier to overlook when the final result is positive.
Losing changes that equation. Suddenly, Alabama must determine whether the same energy, preparation and accountability that existed during its undefeated stretch will remain when the excitement surrounding the program takes a hit.

DeBoer believes his players are ready to get back to work, pointing to conversations inside the locker room following the defeat. But saying the right things immediately after a loss and delivering the appropriate response throughout the following week are two entirely different challenges.
That is where Alabama’s leadership must become especially important. The Crimson Tide does not need to reinvent its identity because of one disappointing result. They do, however, need to demonstrate that their confidence was built on something more substantial than simply winning games.
For Alabama fans, there is no reason to abandon belief in this team. One loss does not erase everything the program has accomplished. Still, DeBoer made something clear. The Crimson Tide’s character is about to be tested, and the response will tell everyone considerably more than another victory during an undefeated run ever could.
