Just two weeks ago, Georgia looked like one of the most dominant teams in college football. Now, Kirby Smart and the Bulldogs are facing another potential setback that could shake up the SEC championship race.

No. 3 Georgia (6-1) returns to action Saturday against No. 17 Florida (5-2) in one of the biggest matchups of Week 9.

The Bulldogs are coming off a stunning 27-24 loss to Auburn, a game in which Georgia squandered an early 14-0 lead and committed three costly turnovers.

Florida, meanwhile, enters the rivalry showdown with renewed confidence following a 27-24 upset victory over Texas.

With both teams coming off a bye week, Saturday’s matchup could have major implications for the SEC standings and the College Football Playoff race.

Georgia Looking to Avoid Another Costly SEC Loss

Georgia entered its matchup against Auburn as the nation’s top-ranked team, but the Bulldogs struggled to put away an opponent they were heavily favored to beat.

Despite outgaining Auburn 440-366, Georgia’s three turnovers proved costly, including a late fumble that set up the Tigers‘ game-winning field goal.

It was a surprising performance from a Georgia team that had previously established itself as one of the SEC’s strongest championship contenders.

The Bulldogs still lead the conference in scoring offense at 43 points per game and scoring defense at just 15.9 points allowed per contest.

However, another loss would leave Georgia with two conference defeats and make the road to Atlanta considerably more complicated.

And with a road trip to Ole Miss looming in November, Smart’s team cannot afford to overlook a dangerous Florida squad.

Florida Has Already Proven It Can Pull Off an Upset

Florida has experienced its share of ups and downs under first-year head coach Jon Sumrall, but the Gators have already demonstrated their ability to knock off a highly ranked opponent.

Florida’s 27-24 road victory over Texas was arguably its biggest win of the season.

Quarterback Tramell Jones Jr. stepped into the starting role and helped the Gators pull off the upset, while Florida’s defense delivered five sacks and 11 tackles for loss.

Now, the Gators have an opportunity to deliver another statement against one of their biggest rivals.

Georgia has won five consecutive meetings in the series, including a narrow 24-20 victory last season.

But after watching Auburn expose some vulnerabilities in the Bulldogs, Florida has reason to believe it can end that streak.

SEC Championship Race Could See Another Shakeup

Saturday’s matchup carries significance well beyond the Georgia-Florida rivalry.

Georgia enters Week 9 with a 4-1 conference record, trailing Kentucky in the SEC standings. Alabama sits just behind the Bulldogs at 4-2, while several other contenders remain in the hunt with two conference losses.

A Georgia victory would keep the Bulldogs firmly in the conference championship picture.

A Florida upset, however, could create another logjam near the top of the standings and give teams such as Alabama, LSU, and Ole Miss additional opportunities to climb.

For Georgia, Saturday is about more than extending its winning streak against Florida.

It’s an opportunity to prove that the Auburn loss was an isolated setback rather than a sign of bigger problems.

And with the College Football Playoff race heating up, another disappointing performance could have consequences that extend well into December.
