The Texas Longhorns and head coach Steve Sarkisian are widely expected to be one of the top National Championship contenders in the country during the upcoming 2026 college football season.

Led by star quarterback Arch Manning, the sky is the limit for the Longhorns. They have the talent to win it all. Just like last season, the expectations are high.

Unfortunately, last season didn’t end up going quite as expected. Texas ended up missing out on the College Football Playoff. Sarkisian is hoping to turn that around this year.

While all eyes are on the upcoming season for the Longhorns, some major news came out on Wednesday. Texas has received a massive prediction on the 2027 recruiting front.

According to Rivals, the Longhorns are expected to land a commitment from five-star cornerback prospect John Meredith III.

Who Is John Meredith III and What Are the Texas Longhorns Getting?

247 Sports has ranked Meredith as a five-star cornerback in the 2027 recruiting class. He has also been ranked the No. 1 cornerback prospect in the country and the No. 5 overall player in the entire class.

Hailing from Forth Worth, Texas, Meredith is a 6-foot-2 and 175-pound defensive back. He combines great size with elite speed and athleticism. Meredith projects as a potential NFL player down the road.

Texas faced serious competition from multiple different programs to land Meredith. Among the other teams who pushed hard to get him were Alabama, Texas A&M, Ohio State, and Miami.

Obviously, this is just a prediction. Things could fall apart and change, but the predictions from Rivals very rarely end up being wrong. Meredith seems extremely likely to make a commitment to play football for the Longhorns soon.

What Are the Experts Saying About John Meredith III?

Andrew Ivins, the director of scouting for 247 Sports, has shared a few bullet points with his thoughts on Meredith’s game.

“Projects as a potential CB1 for a College Football Playoff contender that can help shut down one side of the field,” Ivins wrote.

He also shared one potential issue with the standout cornerback, but admitted that it is hard to find flaws with Meredith.

“Must get better at flipping the hips and running, but it’s hard to find many holes in a profile that’s chock-full of green numbers.”

Only time will tell whether or not Meredith can live up to the hype of being such a high-ranked prospect. At least for now, it appears that Texas will be the program to find out.
