8-Year Detroit Tigers Pitcher Becomes Free Agent

This week, a former Tigers pitcher became a free agent.
Matthew Boyd (most recently with the Chicago Cubs) will be available to sign with any team in the MLB.
MLB.com wrote (on October 30): “LHP Matthew Boyd elected free agency.”

Boyd finished the 2026 season going 10-5 with a 3.91 ERA in 22 starts.
At 35, he will be an intriguing free agent to hit the market.
Looking At Boyd

Boyd was picked in the 6th round of the 2013 MLB Draft.
He started out his MLB career with the Toronto Blue Jays.
MLB.com wrote (on July 30, 2015): “Detroit Tigers traded LHP David Price to Toronto Blue Jays for LHP Matt Boyd, LHP Daniel Norris and LHP Jairo Labourt.”

Boyd then spent part of seven seasons in Detroit.
He went 42-65 with a 4.92 ERA in 162 games.
Looking At Boyd’s Other Stops

Boyd then spent one season with the Seattle Mariners before returning to Detroit in 2023.
He pitched the 2024 season for the Cleveland Guardians.
The 2025 All-Star has been with the Cubs for the last two seasons.
Looking At The Tigers
The Tigers finished the 2026 regular season with a 76-86 record, which had them as the fourth-place team in the American League Central.
They last reached the World Series during the 2012 season when Justin Verlander was in his first stint with the franchise.
