Toronto Blue Jays DFA 8-Year Veteran Reliever & Call Up Lefty

The Blue Jays have made some roster moves ahead of their Dodgers series

Things are not going well for the Toronto Blue Jays right now. The Blue Jays have lost each of their last four games and now have an underwhelming 4-5 record because of it. They also were swept in their recent three-game series against the Chicago White Sox, so there is no question that the Blue Jays are struggling in a major way.

With the Blue Jays in a rough stretch, they have made some roster moves ahead of their upcoming series against the Los Angeles Dodgers. One of Toronto’s pitchers has been selected to the major league, while another has been designated for assignment.

Toronto Blue Jays Select Josh Fleming to Major League Roster

The Blue Jays have announced that they have selected Josh Fleming from Triple-A Buffalo. The 29-year-old pitcher has appeared in one game this season for Triple-A Buffalo, where he allowed one run and had three strikeouts in 3.2 innings pitched. Now, with today’s news, he is getting a chance on the Blue Jays’ roster.

Fleming has not played at the major league level since the 2024 season with the Pittsburgh Pirates. In 25  games for the Pirates during that campaign, the 6-foot-2 lefty had a 1-1 record, a 4.02 ERA, and 17 strikeouts.

Fleming has five years of major league experience on his resume. In 80 career major league games split between the Tampa Bay Rays and Pirates, he has a 20-14 record, a 4.77 ERA, 161 strikeouts, and a 4.77 ERA.

Fleming will now be looking to impress after getting this chance on the Blue Jays’ roster. If he does, it could very well help his chances of sticking around on Toronto’s major league roster as the season carries on.

Blue Jays Designated Austin Voth for Assignment

In addition to selecting Fleming’s contract, Toronto announced that right-handed pitcher Austin Voth has been designated for assignment.

Voth appeared in one game for the Blue Jays this season before being DFA’d, where he had one strikeout and allowed one earned run in 2.2 innings pitched. This was the first time that Voth pitched at the major league level since the 2024 season when he was a member of the Seattle Mariners. In 68 games for the Mariners that season, he had a 2-5 record, a 3.69 ERA, and 61 strikeouts.

Voth has a 17-19 record, a 4.69 ERA, and 344 strikeouts in 208 career major league games split between the Washington Nationals, Baltimore Orioles, Mariners, and Blue Jays. With this, he has a decent amount of experience and could generate some interest from teams looking for more pitching depth because of it.

Blue Jays Need to Bounce Back Against Dodgers Big Time

There is no question that this series against the Dodgers is a big one for Toronto. Not only are the Blue Jays struggling, but the Dodgers, of course, are the team that defeated Toronto in Game 7 of the World Series last year. Therefore, this is a huge series for the Blue Jays, and they will be looking to get things back on track.

The Dodgers won’t be an easy opponent, though, as the back-to-back reigning World Series champions are off to a hot start this season. They currently have a 7-2 record and are on a three-game winning streak.
