The New York Yankees are in a good spot at this point of the season. They are currently sporting a 73-55 record and hold the top spot in the American League wild card standings. They have also been hot as of late, as they have won each of their last five games.
While things are certainly going well for the Yankees this season, it would not hurt for them to give some of their promising prospects a chance at the major league level. Due to this, the Yankees are now being recommended to call up one of their red-hot pitching prospects.
In a recent article for MLB.com, Jonathan Mayo, Jim Callis, and Sam Dykstra urged the Yankees to call up Elmer Rodriguez to their major league roster again.
“The Yankees don’t have a rotation opening and Rodriguez hasn’t stood out in four brief stints in New York this year, but the Triple-A International League ERA leader (2.59) could provide some useful bulk innings out of the bullpen,” the trio wrote.
When noting that Rodriguez has been showing a lot of promise in the minors this season, it would make sense for the Yankees to give him another look on their major league roster. He has a plethora of potential and could thrive if given another opportunity on New York’s roster.
Yankees Prospect Elmer Rodriguez Is Making a Real Case for a Call Up
When looking at how Rodriguez is performing with Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre there is no question that he is making a real case for himself to earn a call up from the Yankees. In 19 games so far this season with Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre, he has an 8-3 record, a 2.59 ERA, and 99 strikeouts. With numbers like these, he has certainly been very good for the Triple-A club.
Yet, more notably, Rodriguez is only staying hot as the season rolls on. For example, during his Aug. 13 appearance against Triple-A Lehigh Valley, he pitched seven scoreless innings, where he struck out seven batters and only allowed three hits. He then followed that up by allowing just one run in five innings pitched in his most recent appearance. With this, he has certainly been showing a lot of promise in Triple-A.
Looking at Rodriguez’s Stats With the Yankees This Season
While Rodriguez has spent the bulk of this season in the minors, he has made a few appearances for the Yankees this season. In four starts with the Yankees this season, he has a 0-2 record, a 4.76 ERA, and 10 strikeouts. His most recent appearance for New York was back on June 21, so it has been two months since he pitched in the majors.
Yet, given how well he has performed in Triple-A lately, it would make a lot of sense for the Yankees to give him another chance on their major league roster before the season is over. The 23-year-old righty has a lot of potential and could give New York’s pitching staff a nice boost if he broke out. It will be interesting to see if he lands a call-up from here.
