Pittsburgh Pirates Quietly Sign 22-Year-Old Outfielder Before Dodgers Series

The Pittsburgh Pirates are set to begin a three-game series against the Los Angeles Dodgers at Dodger Stadium at 10:10 p.m. CDT on Friday.

Before Friday’s game, the Pirates quietly announced they signed a 22-year-old outfielder.

Via MiLB.com (Aug. 20): Pittsburgh Pirates signed free agent OF Owen Prince to a minor league contract.

The Pirates assigned Prince to the Florida Complex League (FCL) Pirates.

Prince played four seasons (2023-26) at the Virginia Military Institute.

In 184 collegiate games, Owen slashed .321/.458/.401 with four home runs, 21 doubles, four triples, 92 RBI and 103 stolen bases.

Prince played in the MLB Draft League this year as well.

The outfielder hit .282/.464/.336 with two doubles, two triples, 15 RBI and 24 stolen bases for the Williamsport Crosscutters in the Draft League. Despite his strong on-base ability, Prince went undrafted.

The Pirates are coming off a 2-1 series victory over the Detroit Tigers at PNC Park. They had the day off on Thursday.

Before the Tigers series, the Pirates won two of three games against the Boston Red Sox at PNC Park.

Pittsburgh is 5-5 in its last 10 games.

With a 63-66 record, the Pirates are 5 1/2 games back of the San Diego Padres for the final National League Wild Card spot.

Pittsburgh is in fourth place in the National League Central. The team is 16 1/2 games back of the first-place Milwaukee Brewers.

Right-hander Bubba Chandler (6-8, 4.23 ERA, 108 K) is slated to start for the Pirates tonight. Right-hander Yoshinobu Yamamoto (12-7, 2.60 ERA, 136 K) is expected to start for the Dodgers.
