Earlier this weekend, news came out that the Giants had released Diego Cartaya from their organization.

He had been playing for the Eugene Emeralds.

Jeff Young of Around The Foghorn wrote (on Saturday): “The Giants released catcher Diego Cartaya from their High-A roster. He was viewed as one of the top prospects during the 2018 – 2019 international signing period. He joined the Dodgers on a $2.5M signing bonus.”

Cartaya has yet to make his MLB debut at 24.

He has reached as high as Triple-A with the Los Angeles Dodgers and Minnesota Twins organizations.

At one point, Cartaya was seen as being among the best prospects in all of baseball.

Dodgers Nation wrote (on January 26, 2023): “Dodgers have 7 prospects in MLB Pipeline’s latest top 100 ranking:

14. Diego Cartaya 24. Bobby Miller RHP 37. Miguel Vargas 54. Michael Busch 56. Gavin Stone 70. Ryan Pepiot 81. Andy Pages

This season, Cartaya is batting .107 with three hits and one home run in ten games.

Since he is still young, it will be interesting to see if another team takes a chance on his potential.

Bruce Kuntz of Dodgers Digest wrote (on June 19, 2022): “#Dodgers no. 1 prospect Diego Cartaya has only continued to heat up in the time since his promotion to High-A. He’s now 12 games in with his new team, and is slashing .356/.482/.644 in his time with Great Lakes. The future is VERY bright for baseball’s no. 24 prospect”

The Giants enter the day as the fourth-place team in the National League West with a 12-15 record in 27 games.

Following the Marlins, they will visit Bryce Harper and the Philadelphia Phillies on Tuesday night.

Last season, the Giants missed the MLB playoffs after going 81-81.

Tony Vitello is in his first season as the team’s manager.
