The San Francisco Giants suffered a pretty tough weekend’s worth of defeats over the past three days, and with Sunday afternoon’s loss, they were swept by the Boston Red Sox.
It’s been a rough season for the Giants thus far, and while they’ve been out of contention for some time now, the games on the schedule must still be played.
During the Giants’ loss on Sunday, star infielder Willy Adames had to be removed from the game with an apparent elbow injury.
MLBTR.com’s Mark Polishuk wrote (on Sunday, 8/23):
“Adames hurt his left elbow on an awkward slide into home in the first inning and was replaced in the field before the bottom of the fifth. For the final out of that frame, Bericoto hurt his right knee chasing after a ball in foul territory that was ruled an out due to fan interference, and Drew Gilbert pinch-hit for Bericoto in the first at-bat of the sixth inning.”
After the Willy Adames injury, news surfaced about his next steps after the Red Sox series.

Willy Adames Set for MRI on Elbow

According to multiple reports, Willy Adames is set for an MRI on his elbow.
It’s a situation where, if the injury is pretty serious, Adames could be done for the year.
CBSSports.com’s RotoWire staff wrote:
“Adames was removed from the game in the fifth inning, and the belief is that he sustained the injury in the first inning while sliding awkwardly into home plate. The 30-year-old finished his day having gone 1-for-3, and he’s notched at least one hit in nine of his last 11 contests, batting .333 with three home runs, four RBI, five runs scored and a stolen base over that stretch.”
It also appears that Christian Koss will take the place of Adames for now, especially if an IL stint in required.

Despite the season-long struggles for the San Francisco Giants, who are 52-78 and could be on track for a devastating 100-loss season, Willy Adames has been a mainstay in the batting order.
Over 120 games played this season, Adames is batting .229 with 21 home runs, 25 doubles, 51 RBI, and an OPS+ of exactly league-average (100).
He’s added a bWAR of 1.8, but if this is it for Adames’ 2026 campaign, he’s regressed in pretty much every major hitting category from prior seasons.
