Milwaukee Bucks coach Doc Rivers recently revealed behind-the-scenes drama involving ESPN insider Shams Charania and a lighthearted Giannis Antetokounmpo joke from All-Star weekend.
In an interview, Rivers detailed how his playful remark escalated unexpectedly, sparking rumors of a “revenge article.” This stems from ongoing Bucks-Giannis trade speculation that Charania heavily covered before the deadline, where no deal happened.
Rivers joked at a press conference that Giannis, coaching the Celebrity All-Star Game with Charania on his team, planned to “put Shams on the trading block.” The Bucks amplified it on social media, trolling Charania amid his reports of Milwaukee listening to offers for the star.
Rivers shared the full story:
“I made a joke before All-Star where I said, ‘Giannis should trade Shams.’ Shams took that so personal that he actually called the Bucks and yelled at them to take it down. The NBA called the Bucks and are like, ‘Shams wants us to tell you this, but we really don’t care.’ And then the NBA posted it! I’ve heard from 10 different people that Shams is going to do revenge article on you guys and on you. And I was like, ‘okay, I don’t care.'”
Charania’s deadline reporting fueled Giannis rumors, but Rivers stayed put, prompting Bucks’ jabs. Rivers dismissed backlash: “It’s part of our life,” noting Charania is very young.
Giannis Trade Saga Adds Fuel To Bucks–Shams Tension
The Milwaukee Bucks were pretty much still in the game back then, right before the 2026 NBA trade deadline. They were actively taking some calls from multiple contenders who were very interested in their franchise superstar. Teams like the Heat, Warriors, and Timberwolves all showed their interest at different levels.
Miami was the one that came out most aggressively in front as a suitor. Reports saying that the Miami Heat proposed a package around Tyler Herro, Kel’el Ware, and several draft picks, one that the Bucks seriously looked at before finally saying no.
Even with all the talking, nothing changed hands. In the end, the Bucks decided to keep Giannis; they believed that they could probably get a much better offer after the season as opposed to doing a big midseason deal.
The no-trade outcome did not stop the rumors at all. On the contrary, it was reported that Antetokounmpo was becoming more and more upset with the team during a very disappointing season. One of the sources of his frustration was also that there had been disagreements within the team, one of which was related to speculations about his health status and playing availability.
Across the league, executives are now seeing a possible trade of Giannis to be one of the biggest stories that the next offseason will bring. They are of the opinion that it would take a huge offer to even consider such a trade: a young star who is already established, a prospect with a lot of potential, and several first-round picks to make it worthwhile to trade away a two-time MVP who is still among the best players in the game.
Meanwhile, Milwaukee’s choice to postpone the inevitable has simply attracted more attention to them. With insiders like Shams Charania still shedding light on what’s going on, it’s not difficult to understand how even a simple joke from Doc Rivers could be seen as part of a much bigger story.
