Giannis Antetokounmpo could land with the Lakers this offseason.

It sure feels like Giannis Antetokounmpo is closing in on the end of a remarkable era.

Antetokounmpo, 31, has battled a testy season that has ranged from injuries to his team’s poor play. The Milwaukee Bucks are lottery-destined for the first time in years.

And after just another couple of months, they could be without a superstar for the first time in many years.

Antetokounmpo remains sidelined with a hyperextended knee injury he sustained over two weeks ago. Meanwhile, the Bucks continue to freefall and are nowhere near even the final play-in spot.

It has become widely accepted that Antetokounmpo, who was involved in talks ahead of the February trade deadline, is riding out his final stretch as a Buck. The former Finals MVP has established himself as the most decorated player in Milwaukee history.

Antetokounmpo may already be looking ahead at not just his new home but the kind of teammates he wants to play with.

Giannis Antetokounmpo sends pointed message about team culture

Drafted 13 years ago, Antetokounmpo has seen many players come through the Milwaukee facility. He has perhaps surely built strong relationships, particularly with teammates he’s enjoyed winning playoff and Finals games with, like ex-Bucks stars Jrue Holiday and Khris Middleton

Now having been through the trenches and knowing what it takes to win at the high level, Antetokounmpo can describe the kind of character it takes for every player on the team to exhibit if winning a title is the highest priority.

In saying that, he may also have a message to those teams dreaming about acquiring him this offseason.

“The most important thing — and now, I’m not a coach, but as you said, the head of the snake — when a guy at the end of the bench is like, ‘Hey, man, I can do that, man. I should be getting more minutes, man,” Antetokounmpo said, demonstratively expressing how keeping unrecognized players patient is crucial for maintaining team culture. “… It’s very, very important as a leader, as a coach, to the end of the bench, the 15th guy, the 12th guy has to be positive.

“Because if that guy’s positive, it translates all the way to the front.”

In illustrating his point, Antetokounmpo fondly mentioned old Bucks teammate Bryn Forbes and current teammate Bobby Portis for sacrificing individual shine at times during previous postseasons. He commended both players for putting the best interest of the team first and demonstrating strong effort when finally called upon.

Antetokounmpo has always epitomized success born from team-oriented play. He has embraced leadership for years.

Now into his 30s, his experience level has perhaps matched his immense talent. He is likely eager to take that edge to whichever team he joins next.

Bucks unable to position themselves to contend in years

Ever since winning the franchise’s first title in several decades back in 2021, the Bucks haven’t been able to sculpt a contender.

Antetokounmpo hasn’t regressed, far from it actually. He has gotten better as he’s extended deeper into his prime. With the advancements the league has seen in players’ approach to training and recovery, 31 may as well be the new 21.

OK, more like 26.

It’s hard forgiving Milwaukee for not better positioning itself to at least make lengthy playoff runs since winning the championship five years ago.

A player like Antetokounmpo is generational. The likelihood the franchise sees another player as physically gifted in the next few decades is slim.

Not seeing any way to save the sinking ship, Antetokounmpo is likely already mentally prepared to wave goodbye to the city he’s called home for 13 years.

He’ll demand a ton from teams in terms of roster construction. After not being able to satisfy his competitive fire in Milwaukee the last few years, Antetokounmpo will likely seek a situation that is ready to compete for a title as soon as the team inserts him into the lineup.
