The Minnesota Timberwolves pulled off a playoff upset in the first round of the 2026 NBA postseason. By defeating the Denver Nuggets in six games, the Timberwolves are firing up Game 1 of round two against the San Antonio Spurs on Monday, May 4.
As the Timberwolves prepare for the matchup, some important news regarding their front office president surfaced. According to Michael Scotto of HoopsHype, the team is considering an extension for Tim Connelly.

The extension rumors come right at a time when the Timberwolves had a possible threat lurking. The Dallas Mavericks were reportedly interested in Connelly.
Months after cutting ties with Nico Harrison, the Mavs were seemingly thinking about taking a big swing, but they were more than likely going to get batted down.
According to Marc Stein, the Mavericks were unlikely to be granted an interview with the Minnesota-based executive. On Monday, the Mavericks officially exited the Connelly market, as they moved on by signing a new candidate.

Connelly has been in this position before. A couple of offseasons ago, he was garnering interest from the Detroit Pistons. After firing Troy Weaver, the Pistons wanted to see if they could pluck Connelly from Minnesota’s office.
It didn’t happen for Detroit, but Connelly ended up with a new deal after garnering interest from the Pistons. It seems history could be repeating itself.

Since 2013, Connelly’s rosters have won 55.0% of their games. In the playoffs, 48.9%. The executive had a nine-year run with the Denver Nuggets before joining the Timberwolves in 2022. He is typically credited with building up the Nuggets’ title-winning roster. He built a contender in Minnesota as well.
With the Timberwolves once again recognizing that Connelly is in demand, it might be time for them to think about another deal.
