The Philadelphia 76ers have found themselves at the center of another controversy involving Jaylen Brown, and the latest development could change how fans interpret his departure from the Boston Celtics. After serious allegations surfaced about the former NBA Finals MVP demanding a trade, Brown’s representatives are reportedly pushing back.

According to ESPN’s Kris Rhim, Brown’s representatives denied that the five-time All-Star demanded a trade from Boston, describing the allegation as “10000% a lie.” The response comes after former Celtics player and current broadcaster Brian Scalabrine claimed Brown privately pressured the organization and expressed interest in joining the Milwaukee Bucks.

The competing accounts have reignited questions about one of the NBA’s most consequential offseason transactions. Philadelphia acquired Brown in July in exchange for Paul George and four draft picks, but the circumstances surrounding his departure continue generating considerable attention.

76ers Star Jaylen Brown’s Camp Pushes Back Against Brian Scalabrine

During a Monday appearance on SiriusXM NBA Radio, Scalabrine suggested Brown had privately approached Boston’s front office with demands that could have resulted in a trade.

“My understanding is Jaylen Brown went to the organization and had a list of demands,” Scalabrine said. “And it was like, ‘You either do this or you trade me.'”

Scalabrine also alleged that Brown wanted to land in Milwaukee and had contacted other players about potentially joining him there.

Those comments presented a dramatically different version of events than what NBA fans were told when Boston traded Brown to Philadelphia.

ESPN insider Shams Charania previously reported that Brown never requested a trade and that the Celtics independently decided to explore moving him after their unsuccessful pursuit of Bucks superstar Giannis Antetokounmpo.

Now, the reported denial from Brown’s representatives reinforces that original account while directly challenging Scalabrine’s version.

Importantly, the allegation that Brown demanded a trade remains unsubstantiated. Neither the reported conversations with teammates nor the alleged ultimatum to Boston’s front office has been independently established.

Jaylen Brown’s Celtics Departure Continues Creating Questions

The controversy arrives during an already complicated stretch for Brown and his former organization.

Brown recently questioned former teammate Jayson Tatum’s account of learning about the blockbuster trade, adding another layer of attention to their relationship after nine seasons together in Boston.

The two stars helped deliver the Celtics’ 2024 NBA championship, with Brown earning NBA Finals MVP honors. However, their partnership has become the subject of considerable speculation since Boston decided to move forward without him.

What makes the latest disagreement particularly interesting is Brown’s previous public reaction to being traded. Following the transaction, Brown expressed disappointment with how Boston handled the process and suggested he deserved a more complete explanation from the organization.

Those remarks would appear difficult to reconcile with the suggestion that he had been actively attempting to force his way out, although the complete details of the discussions remain unknown.

For Philadelphia, the most important development is that Brown remains committed to helping the 76ers compete for a championship alongside their established stars. Nevertheless, the public disagreement over his departure could continue following him throughout the season, particularly when Philadelphia faces Boston.

Brown’s representatives have now reportedly offered a forceful denial. Whether Scalabrine provides additional evidence to support his allegations remains to be seen. Until then, the competing accounts leave one central question unanswered: Who actually wanted Jaylen Brown out of Boston?
