Philadelphia 76ers guard VJ Edgecombe has sparked a debate after revealing that representing the Bahamas at the Olympics would mean more to him than winning an NBA championship.
Former NBA guard Jason Williams strongly disagreed with the rookie’s priorities, questioning how the statement would sound to his teammates.
Edgecombe made the comments during an appearance on Jaylen Brown’s Twitch livestream. He explained that helping the Bahamas reach the Olympics would be a historic achievement for his country.
Jason Williams Questions Edgecombe’s Priorities

Williams did not hold back when discussing Edgecombe’s comments on a clip shared by Hoopin’ N Hollerin’ on X. The former NBA champion argued that a player’s commitment to his NBA team should take priority.
“What the f*** you talking about? I’m not your Bahamian teammate. I’m your Sixer teammate. We trying to win a chip here,” Williams said.
He also questioned whether Edgecombe’s words could create concerns about his commitment to Philadelphia. Williams suggested that teammates might interpret the statement as a sign that representing his country mattered more to him than winning with the Sixers.
“The motherf***ers that are paying me my check means way more to me than them,” Williams added, explaining his own approach to professional basketball.
Williams acknowledged that Edgecombe is only 21 years old, but he rejected the idea that age should change how players view their responsibilities to their teams.
Why Edgecombe’s Olympic Dream Matters to the Sixers

Edgecombe’s comments come at an important time for Philadelphia.
The Sixers have made major moves to strengthen their championship chances, adding Jaylen Brown and LeBron James to a roster featuring Joel Embiid and Tyrese Maxey. Expectations are high heading into the 2026-27 season.
The 21-year-old guard is also coming off an impressive rookie campaign. He averaged 16 points, 5.6 rebounds and 4.2 assists per game. He finished third in Rookie of the Year voting and quickly established himself as an important part of Philadelphia’s future.
But, Edgecombe’s statement does not necessarily mean he lacks commitment to the Sixers.
He has already represented the Bahamas in international competition and understands what Olympic qualification would mean for a small nation with limited basketball history.
At the same time, Williams’ reaction highlights the difference in perspective between a veteran focused on winning championships and a young player pursuing a historic milestone for his nation.
