The Portland Trail Blazers are seeking to expand upon a 42-40 season in the campaign ahead.
Portland is coming off of a season in which they earned the seven seed in the Western Conference. Wholesale changes are continuing to come into fold despite the successful season, however.
Among the changes are the move to trade for point guard Ja Morant, as well as the hiring of longtime assistant coach Micah Nori to lead the franchise.
An unfortunate reality hit Portland on Monday following months of positive momentum.
Fourth-year guard Shaedon Sharpe is the victim of a torn meniscus and is expecting to miss an extended period of time in response. This is according to ESPN’s Shams Charania (X).
Portland Roster Remains in Strong Position

The loss of Sharpe stings, there is little denying this. While Sharpe is below average in numerous metrics, he is great in creation and above-average in a handful of defensive categories (Crafted NBA).
Portland is still in a strong position – even through the absence that is expecting to extend into February. Morant is slotting in as the team’s starting point guard, while Damian Lillard is taking on an off-ball role. Longtime veteran Jrue Holiday is going to be a glue-guy – with or without Sharpe in the fold. The 2021 NBA champion still profiles as an elite playmaker and well above average defender – even at 36 (Crafted NBA).
The key to the 2026-27 season (minus Sharpe) is very likely to be Scoot Henderson. The 2023 second overall pick is showing real promise heading into year four. Henderson has real potential to etch himself as the point guard of the future in the season ahead.
Sharpe’s Future in Portland is Murky

Sharpe’s six-month recovery window means that he is unlikely to return until late February.
By this time, Nori is overwhelmingly likely to have a solidified rotation in the lead-up to a playoff run. Morant, Lillard, and Henderson will be the three perimeter-centric guards. Holiday is a tweener that is more versatile in comparison to Sharpe. Forwards Deni Avdija and Toumani Camara aren’t ceding rotational spots to Sharpe.
It’s simply challenging to find a definitive spot in the rotation for the deeply talented Sharpe – even after returning from the injury.
Will Sharpe be a trade candidate? The 23-year old is in year one of a four-year, $90 million contract (Spotrac). This sets the stage for the shooting guard to be a viable candidate to move elsewhere. The Canadian is in possession of a contract that is a “good” value in all senses of the word.
There is sure to be suitors looking to add a former lottery pick into the fold. Would Portland be willing to part with the talented scorer in light of rostering an aging Lillard and Morant on an expiring deal?
