Though Carr is still far from optimal health, the fact that he's not dealing with any new injury to his shoulder is at least a bit of good news, considering that he had previously suffered an AC joint sprain to the shoulder back in late September. Carr didn't end up missing any game action due to that injury, but he may face an uphill battle to not only clear the five-step protocol, but also to fully move past the rib issue ahead of the Saints' Week 14 matchup with the Panthers this coming Sunday. He's in the concussion protocol for the second time this season, after previously suffering a head injury in a Nov. 12 loss to the Vikings in Week 10 before clearing the protocol after the Saints' Week 11 bye. Jameis Winston finished the loss to the Lions as the primary option at quarterback and would likely start Week 14 if Carr isn't able to go, while jack-of-all-trades Taysom Hill would also presumably be in store for at least a handful of snaps under center, too.
Carr was carted off the field during Sunday's loss, and in addition to sustaining a concussion he was evaluated for back and shoulder injuries. This is his second time in the concussion protocol in a three-game span, a fact that casts significant doubt on his chances of returning to the lineup in time to take on the Panthers in Week 14. Jameis Winston will start for New Orleans if Carr misses time.
On a day when Rashid Shaheed's absence due to a thigh injury further atrophied a Saints receiving corps already down Michael Thomas (IR-knee), Moreau stepped up to provide some pass-catching production in the narrow loss. The fifth-year pro's two catches were his first since Week 9, while his yardage total was his second highest in a game this season. Moreau is likely to continue in a strict complementary role with sparse opportunity during a Week 14 home matchup against the Panthers.
The rookie was expected to enjoy an expanded role with Rashid Shaheed (thigh) sidelined, but Perry finished a distant third in targets behind Chris Olave and Alvin Kamara. Perry now has at least one catch in three straight contests, but he'll project for an even smaller role than Sunday's if Shaheed is ready to return for a Week 14 home matchup against the Panthers.
Johnson failed to log a reception for the first time this season. The 27-year-old also made a pivotal mistake on the Saints' first offensive play of the game when he failed to secure a short pass while running across the middle of the field. This resulted in the ball popping up in the air and allowed Lions safety Brian Branch to make a diving interception. The Saints went on to fall behind 21-0 late in the first quarter, and Johnson did not record a target after early in the second quarter. Johnson still logged more targets than fellow tight ends Foster Moreau (two) and Jimmy Graham (one), though those two combined for three receptions and a touchdown. Johnson's performance is especially disappointing considering that the Saints were without two of their top three wideouts with Rashid Shaheed (thigh) inactive and Michael Thomas (knee) on IR. Across eight games this season, the 6-foot-4 tight end has recorded 18 receptions (on 29 targets) for 142 yards and just one touchdown. He'll look to play an all-around better game this coming Sunday against the Panthers.
Grupe continued to handle the Saints' kicking duties on both kickoffs and extra points/field goals after coming into the game questionable with a groin injury. The rookie out of Notre Dame has now knocked through all 23 of his PATs this season, and he's missed just six of 30 field-goal attempts through the first 12 games of his career.
Williams tallied five or fewer rushing attempts for the fifth time in the last six games. His usage in the rushing game remained minimal despite the absence of rookie running back Kendre Miller (ankle) for the second week in a row. Instead, top runing back Alvin Kamara and versatile tight end Taysom Hill continued to form a unique one-two punch, accouting for 27 carries for 110 yards and three rushing scores. Wideout Lynn Bowden also got involved with two rushing attempts while Rashid Shaheed (thigh), who usually serves as a rushing threat on end arounds, was inactive Sunday. Barring any injuries to Kamara and/or Hill moving forward, Williams should continue to play a negligible role in this rushing attack.
