The Dallas Cowboys continue to make roster moves during the early stages of training camp. One position to watch is running back as the Cowboys made a series of moves.
Dallas cut ties with a promising rookie playmaker before the running back could play a game for the Cowboys. The franchise released Dominic Richardson fresh off a career year at Tulsa.
Richardson was one of the first undrafted free agents the Cowboys signed following the 2026 NFL draft. Dallas made the move in order to make room for former UFL star running back Jashaun Corbin.

Ex-Cowboys RB Dominic Richardson Is Coming Off a Career Year
Richardson posted 212 carries for 1,065 yards and five touchdowns during 12 appearances at Tulsa in 2025. The running back also had prior stops at Oklahoma State and Baylor.
Ahead of the NFL draft, Football Guys’ Dave Kluge compared Richardson to former New England Patriots running back Damien Harris.
“Richardson has an impressive frame with broad shoulders and a thick core, and he uses it to violently finish runs,” Kluge wrote in a January 20, scouting report on Richardson. “His muscular build yielded workload durability, as he closed out the 2025 season with his two best games as a rusher. Richardson lacks dynamic play-making abilities, as his tight hips and stout legs take some time to get moving.
“However, he makes up for it with a borderline reckless desire to get downhill, mitigating potential losses with brute force over finesse. Richardson might need to put on a few pounds and lean into a new role in the pros, but his vigor could catch the eye of coaches and earn him an opportunity as a short-yardage back.”
The Cowboys Are Looking for Running Back Depth Behind Javonte Williams Amid Latest Roster Moves
Dallas found the team’s workhorse running back in Javonte Williams last season. Yet, the team is still solidifying who will get carries behind Williams in 2026.
Jaydon Blue, Phil Mafah and Malik Davis are among the running backs fighting for touches. Cowboys offensive coordinator Klayton Adams outlined why Williams had success during his initial season in Dallas.
“Obviously the guy’s pretty good on direct runs and he’s hard to get down behind the line of scrimmage, but I think that he is a more diverse runner than he probably gets credit for,” Adams said of Williams, per ESPN’s Todd Archer. “I think the guy does a really nice job with some of the outside zone stuff, particularly the weak side.
“He’s got really quick feet. He’s able to get in and out of cuts really well. And he’s one of those dudes that’s not scared to run through the smoke, and that’s what you’re going to have to do on some of the time. I think he’s good at a lot of things.”
Time will tell if Corbin can emerge as one of the running backs who will spell Williams this season. Corbin posted 131 carries for 466 rushing yards and three touchdowns in 10 appearances for the Orlando Storm during the 2026 UFL season.
