There have been a lot of questions surrounding the direction of the Miami Dolphins. After the firing of GM Chris Grier, questions still abound about whether there could be more to come. However, that hasn’t stopped several rumors from spreading surrounding who the team could be looking at to potentially improve the roster. And one name has come up above the rest, specifically at the QB position.
Potential Target: Mac Jones’ Rising Stock
Mac Jones has found new life as the 49ers backup this season. After replacing an injured Brock Purdy for several weeks, he threw for 2,151 yards, 13 touchdowns, and six interceptions. He most importantly, won five of his eight starts, keeping the Niners in playoff contention despite the myriad injuries in their roster. Jones is still only 27 years old and has one year left on his contract as well. This opens the door to potential free agency offers and according to Albert Breer, the Dolphins could be one of those teams in the mix for his services.
This all likely depends on the situation regarding Tua Tagovailoa. Tua also still has one year left on his contract, but hasn’t really been the answer for the Dolphins for a while. Mac Jones could provide a potential bridge solution as well on the cheap. Still, the Niner’s own problems, starting with the frequency of Purdy’s injuries could see the Niners wanting to keep Jones as a backup in case further setbacks befall Purdy. According to Albert Breer, it would not be outlandish for a team to potentially get Jones in a trade with a Day 2 and conditional Day 3 draft pick. This may be something the Dolphins could look into.
Coaching Uncertainty and Its Impact on the QB Decision
One highly pivotal factor to all of this potentially happening is the situation surrounding coach Mike Mcdaniel. The reality of the situation is that his job security isn’t necessarily intact. The Dolphins have been winning as of late, as they have secured victories in three of their last four games. Still, with Grier gone and Tua still somewhat underperforming, questions are going to mount. It will ultimately come down to ownership decisions in terms of which way the Dolphins could be leaning. Should they retain Mcdaniel, perhaps a deal for Jones could be off the table. However, should they choose to go in a different direction, the Jones discussion could heat up.
Several other teams could be part of the Mac Jones saga over the coming months as well. The Minnesota Vikings believe in JJ Mccarthy as of right now. But if he doesn’t lead them to the playoffs? They could turn to Jones and instead of running him out the door like they did Sam Darnold, they could reward him with a bigger deal should the move pay off. The Cardinals could also enter the sweepstakes as rumors surrounding Kyler Murray’s status continue. Still, if there’s any place that potentially has the best infrastructure for Jones, it could be the Dolphins. But you never know.
