The timeline surrounding Mike Vrabel’s sudden absence during the NFL Draft continues to draw attention — and new photos are only adding to the conversation.

Images first published by Page Six show the New England Patriots head coach shopping alone inside Salt Lake City International Airport in Utah just days after missing part of the NFL Draft.

Vrabel’s absence came during the final day of the draft and followed the resurfacing of 2020 photos showing him with reporter Dianna Russini. As confirmed by both the Patriots and Vrabel, he stepped away from the team during that stretch to focus on personal matters, which included addressing the situation privately.

From Draft Absence to Utah Sighting

Vrabel was present for portions of the NFL Draft earlier in the week, but by Day 3, he was notably absent — a surprising development given the importance of late-round selections and roster depth decisions.

The Patriots quickly addressed the situation, stating that Vrabel was stepping away to focus on personal matters and heading to a counseling session. The organization emphasized confidence in executive Eliot Wolf and the front office to carry out the remaining draft responsibilities.

Shortly after, Vrabel surfaced across the country.

According to Page Six, the longtime coach was spotted in Utah — a location that aligns with his known ties to Park City, where he has previously spent time with family.

What the Photos Show

The images themselves show a relatively low-key moment — but one that carries added weight given the timing.

Vrabel appears dressed casually in a baseball cap, blue jacket, jeans, and sneakers, carrying a backpack as he browses through items inside the store. In one sequence, he holds up a matching baby outfit before heading toward checkout.

His wedding ring is visible in multiple photos.

He appears alone throughout the outing, with no team personnel or family members seen alongside him.

Context: Renewed Attention From Past Photos

The Utah sighting comes just days after Page Six published resurfaced images from 2020 showing Vrabel with sports reporter Dianna Russini at a New York City bar.

An eyewitness told the outlet, “They were kissing and they were all over each other,” adding, “He had a ring on.”

Both Vrabel and Russini have since addressed the situation publicly. Russini said the photos do not reflect the full context of the gathering, describing it as part of a larger group setting. Vrabel also acknowledged the situation, saying he wanted to speak with his team before addressing it publicly.

The matter prompted an internal review by The Athletic, where Russini works.

Patriots Respond to Vrabel’s Absence

The Patriots maintained a clear and supportive stance throughout the situation.

“The New England Patriots fully support Mike Vrabel’s decision to prioritize his family first, as well as his own well-being,” the team said in a statement.

They also emphasized that draft preparation had already been completed and that the front office was equipped to handle all remaining selections.

A Routine Moment — With Unusual Timing

On its own, the photos from Utah show nothing out of the ordinary — a coach making a purchase while traveling.

But given the timing, the optics have become part of a larger conversation.

Vrabel’s absence from a key stretch of the NFL Draft, followed by a cross-country sighting and renewed attention around past photos, has kept the spotlight firmly on the Patriots head coach.

As the team transitions out of draft weekend and into offseason programs, that attention is unlikely to fade anytime soon.
