The New York Jets might have a quarterback depth problem.

Beat reporter Nick Faria of Jets X-Factor told me on “Boy Green Daily” that a potential solution could be Philadelphia Eagles quarterback Dorian Thompson-Robinson.

It’s probably not [Kyle] McCord that the Jets would go after if they’re going after an Eagles backup. It’s probably Dorian Thompson-Robinson, DTR. Only because, and I will say this, if Philadelphia decides that they would rather keep McCord on the roster, which is certainly a possibility, allow him to develop on the practice squad, do all those different things. They could look at DTR and say, ‘Listen, we don’t really need you.’ That could mean DTR is on the way out in a couple of weeks,” Faria explained to me.

If he is, I think it’s a really good fit for the Jets because he is going to be cheap and he is going to be able to run the offense that both Justin Fields and Tyrod Taylor can move,” Faria added.

A Young QB With Upside for the Jets to Consider

DTR, 25, entered the league as the No. 140 overall pick in the fifth round of the 2023 NFL draft.

He spent his first two seasons with the Cleveland Browns and was traded this offseason to the Eagles.

The 6-foot-2, 203-pound quarterback still has two cheap years of rookie control left on his $4.1 million contract. In 2025 and 2026, Thompson-Robinson is owed just a $1.03 million and a $1.14 million base salary, respectively.

Over the last two years, DTR has appeared in 15 games and has made five starts. He has a 1-4 record as a starting quarterback, has completed 52.6% of his passes, has thrown for 880 passing yards, but has a 1 touchdown to 10 interception ratio.

He has also contributed 35 rushing attempts for 187 yards, averaging 5.3 yards per carry.

Preseason Performance Has Been Uneven for DTR

Across two preseason games this year, Thompson-Robinson was 10-of-16 for 73 passing yards with no touchdowns and one interception. He also had two carries for zero yards.

The last preseason game included a few ugly lowlights against his old team, the Browns.

“DTR… I hope that he never plays in an Eagles uniform again. Respectfully. I mean, those were like some of the worst plays I’ve ever seen. You know, I hope he does well in the future on somebody else’s team,” host Miles Johnson said on “Real Talk with MJ Podcast.”

A Lot to Like on the College Film for Thompson-Robinson

The NFL results for DTR have been inconsistent. Candidly more down than up.

However, you don’t have to go back far to see some impressive college tape of Thompson-Robinson.

He spent all five of his collegiate seasons at UCLA. During that stretch, he appeared in 50 games. He finished with 10,710 passing yards, completed 63.3% of his passes, and had an 88 touchdown to 36 interception ratio.

Thompson-Robinson also showed off his legs at the collegiate level, racking up 1,826 rushing yards and 28 rushing scores.

Jets QB Depth Issues Explained

Justin Fields is the starter, and Tyrod Taylor is the backup.

Fields has never completed a full season in his career, and neither has Taylor. Taylor appears set to keep that streak going in 2025. He underwent knee surgery this offseason and was ruled out for the preseason. Taylor’s availability for Week 1 against the Pittsburgh Steelers is very much in question.

That leaves the Jets with just two other options on the roster in Adrian Martinez and undrafted free agent Brady Cook. Neither player has appeared in an NFL regular-season game.

Martinez looked uneven in the Week 2 preseason game against the New York Giants. He only completed 57% of his passes and threw an ugly interception across his body toward the middle of the field.

It might be time for the Jets to explore alternative options at the QB spot.
