The Philadelphia Eagles made a series of deep roster moves on Friday, August 21. One of the moves included waiving the sixth-round pick, wide receiver Johnny Wilson.

The 25-year-old becomes available to the rest of the NFL for the first time in his career, since he arrived in the league out of Florida State in 2024.

Friday’s moves certainly suggest that the Eagles are cutting ties with Wilson after an unfortunate start to his career, but one Eagles insider makes it clear that Wilson is likely to be back with the team in some capacity.

“Wilson will revert to IR if he passes through waivers, which is likely,” SI’s John McMullen reported on Friday.

“Rarely do injured players get claimed but the Eagles did do it last year with Willie Lampkin.”

On one hand, any team seeing that and knowing how much Lampkin has impressed the Eagles during training camp this offseason, that might motivate a team to take a low-cost bet on Wilson.

However, the reality is that the Eagles just might watch their 25-year-old prospect clear the waiver wire and rejoin the team on the injured reserve list.

In the NCAA, Wilson played four seasons with two at Arizona State and two at Florida State. During his junior season, he caught 43 passes for 897 yards and five touchdowns in 13 games. In 10 games during his senior campaign, Wilson caught 41 passes for 617 yards and two touchdowns.

The Eagles selected Wilson with the 185th pick (round six) during the 2024 NFL Draft.

During his rookie season, Wilson appeared in 16 games, even getting billed as a starter for four of those matchups. He caught just five passes that year, totaling 38 yards and one score. That year, the Eagles won the Super Bowl, giving Wilson a notable accolade to add to his NFL resume early on.

Unfortunately, Wilson has struggled to stay healthy. Exactly one year before getting waived, Wilson was ruled out for the entire 2025 NFL season due to knee and ankle surgeries.

As the knee injury lingers, Wilson will look to land back on the team’s IR. Anything can happen in the coming days, but that just might be the most likely scenario at this point.
