Thursday’s WTA semifinal action on Arthur Ashe will kick off with a clash between defending US Open champion Aryna Sabalenka, and world No. 4 Jessica Pegula.
Although heading into this tournament the world No. 1 suffered a quarterfinal exit at the Cincinnati Open, she’s looked incredibly dominant since touching down in New York.
Throughout the first four rounds of play, Sabalenka didn’t drop a single set, while notably dolling out two 6-1 breadstick sets. After receiving a walkover in the quarterfinals following the sudden withdrawal of Marketa Vondrousova, Sabalenka is heading into Thursday’s semifinal clash rested and ready to impress.
On the flip side, Jessica Pegula has looked equally as dominant in Flushing Meadows, rattling off five straight wins without dropping a set, while handing out a handful of breadstick sets herself.
Following a quarterfinal win over Barbora Krejcikova, Pegula now heads into Thursday’s semifinal clash with Sabalenka eager to avenge her 2024 US Open final loss.
Sabalenka vs. Pegula H2H
Throughout their careers, Aryna Sabalenka and Jessica Pegula have played eight times.
Heading into Thursday’s match, Sabalenka holds a 7-2 lead in the head-to-head.
In addition, Sabalenka is also on a three-match win streak against Pegula, picking up straight set wins at the 2024 Cincinnati Open, the 2024 US Open, and, most recently, at the 2025 Miami Open.
While Pegula’s most recent win was at the 2023 WTA Finals in Mexico, the American standout explained during her post-match press conference earlier in the week, prior to Sabalenka’s walkover, that it would be, quote, “cool” to get revenge for last year’s final.
“I think it would be cool to be able to get revenge obviously. I didn’t even remember the score, … I didn’t even remember it being that close which was kind of funny because I think after the final I was just so, ‘Wow we should be in a third set right now.’ I was like, ‘I didn’t serve well. I could have gotten better,’ but I wasn’t very, ‘Oh what a great match, I’m happy to be in the finals.’
“I literally walked off the court and told my coach, ‘Well I didn’t serve that well, my serve needs to get better. I didn’t do this well, I didn’t do that well.’ And that’s just the mentality that I have.”
Whether Pegula can come up big and avenge her 2024 US Open final loss, only time will tell.
