Italy's Jannik Sinner's semifinal match against Russia's Daniil Medvedev gets a rain delay during the 2026 Italian Open.

All eyes are on Jannik Sinner amid his historic run at the 2026 Italian Open. Sinner has breezed through most of the tournament, especially without Carlos Alcaraz out with a wrist injury.

However, Daniil Medvedev is proving to be a tough opponent during the semifinals. While Sinner took the first set 6-2, Medvedev won 7-5 in the second set. The Italian superstar, appearing to deal with some leg cramps, was up 4-2 during the third set before a rain storm forced the match to stop.

When will the Sinner-Medvedev match resume?

A tennis app posted on X, “No play for another 40-60 minutes or so (estimate),” at around 9:45 p.m. local time in Rome. While play was initially expected to resume at 10:15 p.m. local time, the rain kept coming down.

The weather has affected numerous matches in Rome this year. A few days earlier, Casper Ruud defeated 13th-ranked Karen Khachanov 6-1, 1-6, 6-2 after a two-hour, 25-minute rain delay during the third set.

While Ruud was leading 4-1 in the first set against Lucian Darderi in the semifinal on Friday, they dealt with another two-hour rain delay. Ruud eventually defeated Darderi 6-1,6-1, and will face the winner of Sinner vs. Medvedev in the Italian Open final on Sunday.

Sinner made it clear he’s not a fan of the continuous delays at the tournament. “When you go out on the court so late, it’s difficult to play good tennis,” he said.

Because Sinner took a medical timeout to receive treatment on his right knee while up 3-2 in the third set, fans couldn’t believe the 24-year-old’s luck with the rain delay. Sinner and Medvedev disagreed on the decision to stop playings.

“What if I slip at the line. How can you not make the decision? It’s pouring,” Sinner said to the umpire. Medvedev, however, wanted to keep playing.

GettySpain’s Rafael Jodar of Spain speaks with umpire Manuel Messina after smoke from a nearby football match surrounds the court in his quarterfinal Italian Open match against Luciano Darderi.

The quarterfinal between Italy’s Luciano Darderi and Spain’s Rafael Jodar was delayed, not due to inclement weather but due to smoke from a nearby fireworks display at Stadio Olimpico. After Inter Milan defeated Lazio 2-0 in the Coppa Italia finale, the celebratory fireworks briefly knocked out “the tournament’s electronic line-calling system,” Reuters reported.

The smoke clouds drifted into the sky above the court while Jodar was up 6-5 in the opening set. Play was halted for 20 minutes while officials waited for the conditions to improve. Darderi ultimately won 7-6 (7-5), 5-7, 6-0, but lost to Ruud in the semifinal.
