Kenneth Kelly: Everything you need to know

Kelly (5-3) earned the win Monday against the Giants, allowing two runs on four hits and two walks while striking out four over seven innings. Kelly turned in another strong outing, tossing 64 of his 96 pitches for strikes while generating 25 combined called and swinging strikes. The veteran right-hander allowed both of his runs in the fourth inning on a two-run double by Rafael Devers, but otherwise kept San Francisco quiet. Kelly has now delivered four straight quality starts, allowing just seven runs over his last 29 innings for a 2.17 ERA during that stretch. Despite the recent success, the underlying metrics remain concerning, as Kelly still ranks in the bottom one percent of MLB in xERA, xSLG and xBA. He now owns a 5.25 ERA with a 31:20 K:BB across eight starts and is scheduled to face Seattle on Sunday.

Kelly collected his third straight quality start and victory to help the Diamondbacks complete the series sweep. The right-hander allowed a home run to Casey Schmitt in the first inning and didn't retire the side in order until the sixth, but he was otherwise able to limit San Francisco to single tallies in the second and fourth frames. After a horrid start to the year resulted in a 9.95 ERA through his first four outings, the 37-year-old has allowed just five runs with a 13:3 K:BB in 22 innings over his last three starts. Kelly's next appearance lines up to be a road rematch with the Giants next week.

Kelly needed 100 pitches to record the 27 outs Friday, and while he didn't overpower hitters, he looked in control all game long. He had outstanding run support all game long, though, as the Diamondbacks erupted for six runs in the first inning and never looked back. Kelly has won his last two starts, posting a 9:3 K:BB while allowing two runs across 16 innings in that stretch. Kelly will try to extend his decent run of results in his next start, scheduled for next week at home against the Giants.
