The Mariners released Loutos on Thursday. Loutos cleared waivers after being designated for assignment, but the Mariners have elected to move on from the reliever rather than outright him. The right-hander has had a rough go of it in his brief time in the majors the last two seasons, posting a 10.67 ERA and 8:9 K:BB over 14.1 innings.
The Mariners designated Loutos for assignment Tuesday, Adam Jude of The Seattle Times reports. The move opens up a 40-man roster spot for Colt Emerson, who inked an eight-year, $95 million extension earlier Tuesday. Loutos failed to earn a spot on the Mariners' Opening Day roster after allowing seven runs (six earned) on seven hits across three innings during Cactus League action.
The Mariners optioned Loutos to Triple-A Tacoma on Sunday. Scooped up off waivers from the Nationals earlier in the offseason, Loutos will begin his time in the Mariners organization at the Triple-A level after he was unable to secure a spot in the Opening Day bullpen. Loutos took himself out of consideration after yielding seven runs (six earned) on seven hits over three innings in four appearances during Cactus League play.
