During the 2nd half of tonight’s Virginia-Louisville game on ESPN, Dick Vitale — conspicuously absent from covering the other Duke-North Carolina game for the second time this season — decided to rant about the NCAA’s recent sanctions against Syracuse University and men’s basketball head coach Jim Boeheim.

The rant seemed to have come from left field. It is known that “Dickie V” has grown close with multiple college basketball head coaches and media personalities while broadcasting for ESPN over the years. To make a decision to defend Boeheim, especially at this point after the thorough NCAA investigation, seemed out of place and something that may get Vitale into hot water — he’s already basically lost his No. 1 broadcasting team duties by being demoted to the second most important ESPN games of the week.
