A critical matchup in the English Premier League headlines the Saturday schedule, as Arsenal hosts Liverpool. Arsenal is comfortably in third place of the English Premier League and is five points clear of Liverpool. The Reds, on the other hand, saw their outstanding run to begin 2015 end in a loss to Manchester United on March 22nd, dropping five points off of the pace for Champions League contention. .
Liverpool’s second half resurgence began as they tied Arsenal in a game known for Martin Skrtel’s equalier in the waning minutes of stoppage time. Since then, Liverpool has moved from 8th to 5th in the table, but have fallen off form recently. After an outstanding 2-1 win over Manchester City and a comfortable 2-0 win over Burnley, Liverpool have tied second division Blackburn 0-0 in the FA Cup, looked sluggish in a 1-0 win at Swansea, and lost their first English Premier League game in four months to Manchester United. Liverpool’s schedule does loosen up before the end of the season, as their matchup with Chelsea on May 9th is the only other team in the top half of the table that Liverpool plays other than Arsenal.
Arsenal, on the other hand, has won their last six English Premier League matches, scoring two or more goals in each game. In fact, since their last meeting on December 21st, Arsenal is the only team in the English Premier League with more points than Liverpool’s 31, as Arsenal has 33 points from 13 matches (11-0-2). Arsenal beat Newcastle in their last game 2-1 and looks to maintain their flawless form since February 7th.
