After winning La Liga in 2013-2014, Atletico Madrid fell back behind world champion Barcelona and inner-city rival Real Madrid to finish third in La Liga in 2014-2015. Atleti has reached the Champions League quarterfinals or further in each of the past two seasons, falling to Real Madrid in the final in 2013-2014 and quarterfinal in 2014-2015, and will participate in the Champions League for the third straight season in 2015-2016 behind top scorer Antoine Griezmann. Added from Real Sociedad in 2014-2015 to replace Diego Costa, the French forward scored 25 goals for Atletico Madrid across all competitions and Atleti has fought off competition from English Premier League giants to keep the 24 year old goalscorer. Atletico Madrid did lose star midfielder Arda Turan to Spanish rivals Barcelona and Mario Manduzic to Juventus this summer, but have added Jackson Martinez, Yannick Ferreira-Carrasco, and starlet Luciano Vietto.

Atleti will open the season at home against La Liga newcomers Las Palmas, but then have to travel to reigning Europa League champions Sevilla before hosting treble winning Barcelona. Madrid derbies with Real Madrid will be on October 4, 2015 and February 28, 2016 and Atletico Madrid will close the season with three of their last four games at home against middle of the table teams from 2014-2015.
