The superfight to end all superfights is headed to boxing’s biggest stage.
Oscar De La Hoya announced Monday that the September 16 fight between Canelo Alvarez and Gennady “GGG” Golovkin will take place at the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada. It will be televised in the United States on HBO PPV.

The T-Mobile Arena, which beat out bids by Jerry Jones for AT&T Stadium and Magic Johnson for Dodger Stadium, is a familiar setting for Canelo, who has fought there the last two Cinco de Mayo weekends. It was there that he knocked out Amir Khan in the sixth round in 2016, and returned to Vegas last month to clinically pick apart Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. for an easy unanimous decision win.
Triple-G has never fought in Las Vegas, though 10 of his last 14 fights have taken place in the United States. He fights mostly in California or New York, most recently defeating Daniel Jacobs via unanimous decision inside Madison Square Garden in March.
Las Vegas is widely considered the hub of the boxing world, so it’s only appropriate that it should host this fight, which will undoubtedly be the biggest since Floyd Mayweather Jr. faced Manny Pacquiao–also in Vegas–in May of 2015.
Canelo and Triple-G are easily two of the best pound-for-pound boxers in the world, and this is a fight fans have long been clamoring for.
Golovkin, the undefeated world WBC, IBF and IBO middleweight champ, up against Canelo, who is set to make the permanent move to middleweight after thoroughly dominating at 154 pounds. They’ve combined for 86 wins, 67 knockouts and countless transcendent performances. Some say Golovkin, 35, took a step back in his loss to Jacobs, but this is about as close as we’re going to get to two of the world’s best clashing during their primes. Oddsmakers put Triple-G as the slight favorite back when the fight was announced in May
Tickets for the superfight aren’t yet available. The fight hasn’t been listed on the T-Mobile Arena website, while TicketMaster allows you to set up alerts for when tickets are available.
