Former WWE Star Alberto Del Rio Being Investigated for Domestic Battery, Report Says

Getty Alberto Rodriguez, known as Alberto Del Rio, is reportedly being investigated for domestic violence.

Former WWE Superstar Alberto Del Rio, whose real name is Jose Rodriguez and is known in other promotions as Alberto El Patron, is being investigated for domestic violence, a report by TMZ Sports on July 10 said.

According to the report, Del Rio, who’s an eight-time world champion between American and Mexican wrestling, was at a Florida airport July 9 around 3 p.m. when he and a “female companion” got into an argument. The Orlando Police Department was contacted after Del Rio allegedly “roughed up” the companion. Witnesses told TMZ that Del Rio and the woman were in the middle of an argument and things escalated, leading to the cops being called.

The Orlando PD released a statement regarding the incident saying they are still gathering information in the incident.

There was an incident at Orlando International Airport at about 3 p.m. Sunday involving Jose Rodriguez (DOB 5/25/1977). The reported incident was a domestic violence battery, and it is still under investigation. No arrests have been made as of this time, but the case remains open. That is all the information we have for release at this time.

Although he’s being investigated for the incident, charges have not yet been filed and he was not arrested. Police didn’t release the name of the victim, though witnesses said that Del Rio was with current WWE Superstar and wife Paige, whose real name is Saraya-Jade Rodríguez, at the airport “for a while.”

But Paige responded to the allegations on Twitter, saying that the incident is being misreported and her and Del Rio called police because an angry woman threw a drink at them.

Paige and Del Rio have had a very public relationship and reportedly tied the knot March 29, just weeks after a sex tape and explicit photos of Paige were leaked on the internet.

After the leak, Del Rio missed a booked appearance and said in a statement that the reason for it was the need to be at home with Paige.

“Due to the invasion of our privacy I need to be home with the person that needs me more at the moment and our family,” he said in the statement provided to the booking agency Prime Time Appearances. “Thanks for your support and I’ll be seeing you there next time.”

Del Rio currently wrestles for Impact Wrestling and debuted on an episode earlier this year under the name Alberto El Patron. He entered himself into the heavyweight championship picture and won the title, though he was forced to relinquish it due to a controversial finish. He debuted in WWE in 2009 after signing a three-year contract.

Del Rio became the WWE Champion for his first time in 2011 and soared in popularity. But he was released from the company on August 7, 2014 for “unprofessional conduct” when an employee reportedly made a “racist” joke and Del Rio responded by slapping him.

After working for a while in the independent circuit and back in Mexico, Del Rio returned to the WWE on October 25, 2015 at the Hell in a Cell pay-per-view. He stayed in the company for about a year, but was suspended for 30 days on August 18, 2016 after he violated the WWE’s wellness policy. While he was suspended, Del Rio claimed that he was unhappy with his return to WWE, saying that he was given empty promises.

On September 9, 2016, Del Rio and the WWE came to terms with a release from his contract and the company.
