Redskins running back Adrian Peterson
Adrian Peterson and the surprising first place Washington Redskins (5-2) look to continue creating distance between themselves and the remainder of the NFC East when they host Matt Ryan the the depleted Atlanta Falcons (3-4) at FedEx Field as Week 9 action continues on Sunday afternoon.
The game is scheduled to start at 1 p.m. ET and will be broadcast on Fox in select areas (coverage map here). Washington went into MetLife Stadium last weekend and took out the lowly 1-7 New York Giants thanks to Peterson’s season-high 149 yards. Peterson rushed for a touchdown and caught a seven-yard receiving touchdown from quarterback Alex Smith, who despite having a banged-up receiving corp, has still guided the Redskins to five wins in their first seven games.
Redskins left tackle Trent Williams underwent thumb surgery on Thursday and is expected to miss about a month. Ty Nsekhe will fill in for Williams as Smith’s blind side protector.
Atlanta, fresh off a bye week, aim to hold on to whatever slim playoff hopes remain available. Likely, fighting down the stretch to finish 9-7 and sneak in with a wild card berth.
The Falcons secondary, which is already in shambles, sustained another blow this week as cornerback Robert Alford (ankle) is out for Sunday, Alford ranks 109th out of 109 players according to Pro Football Focus, so Atlanta can’t get worse at that spot — literally — but Pro Bowler Desmond Trufant continues propping up a clearly dreadful unit.
