The Pittsburgh Steelers will be without head coach Mike Tomlin for the first time since 2007, as a long-lasting partnership between the franchise and Tomlin comes to an end after 19 seasons.

While Tomlin has struggled in the postseason in recent years, there is no denying the impressive legacy he leaves behind in Pittsburgh. The longtime Steelers head coach never finished a season with a losing record, a remarkable achievement in the NFL and a testament to his consistency and leadership.

Throughout the season, the Steelers locker room made it clear that the players fully supported Tomlin. Even former players showed their support following the announcement of Tomlin’s departure, including former star running back Le’Veon Bell.

“go to where your celebrated, Coach T,” Bell wrote on X in response to the news that Tomlin would be stepping down as the franchise’s head coach.

Bell played five seasons with the Steelers after being drafted by the team in 2013 with the 48th overall pick. The former Steeler enjoyed significant success under Tomlin, earning All-Pro honors in multiple seasons wearing the Black and Gold.

Tomlin clearly has the respect of his players in Pittsburgh, and Bell’s message reflects a desire to see the longtime coach find success wherever he goes next.

Where Might Tomlin Go Next

Although there is a chance that the longtime Steelers coach chooses not to pursue a coaching job in 2026, there is no question that if he does, teams will be lined up to interview him. Tomlin has proven he can lead teams to be consistently above average, regardless of the specifics of the roster.

Some teams that are looking for a new head coach that could benefit from a leader like Tomlin include the New York Giants, Atlanta Falcons, and Tennessee Titans.

All three teams share one thing in common: they have struggled to record winning seasons in recent years. The Falcons have not finished with a winning record since 2017, the Titans since 2021, and the Giants since 2022. Bringing in Tomlin could be a major first step toward turning those franchises around.

Of course, there are other options for Tomlin’s career, whether in coaching or elsewhere. But as Bell wrote on X, he hopes Tomlin goes where he is “celebrated”, and there are multiple struggling fan bases in the NFL that would almost definitely welcome him with open arms.

What’s Next for Pittsburgh

The 2026 season will be the first year the Steelers search for a new head coach since hiring Tomlin in 2007.

The franchise could look to add someone like Tomlin, a defensive-minded coach, as defense has long been the Steelers’ identity. Alternatively, they might opt for an offensive-minded coach to help bolster an offense that struggled at times this past season, including a six-point performance in their opening-round playoff loss.

It’s uncertain which direction the team will take, but one thing is clear: Tomlin won’t be easily replaceable.
