Former Alabama Crimson Tide star quarterback Mac Jones was able to reset his NFL career during the 2025 season with the San Francisco 49ers.

After a tough start to his career with the New England Patriots after being a bonafide star at Alabama, Jones seems to be back on track. He took over for some starts with the 49ers this season when Brock Purdy went down with an injury. Jones made the most of that playing time.

When all was said and done this year, Jones completed 69.6 percent of his pass attempts for 2,151 yards, 13 touchdowns, and six interceptions in 11 games played. He made eight starts on the season.

Now, the Crimson Tide alum has seen his name connected to a hot new trade idea from an NFL insider.

Mac Jones Connected to Potential Trade From 49ers to Minnesota Vikings

Sports Illustrated NFL insider Albert Breer opened up about where he could see Jones being traded. The Vikings were his pick as a potential destination.

“Minnesota would be a fun idea,” Breer wrote. “The Vikings will bring in competition for J.J. McCarthy, but may have to do it on a budget. They’ve explored the reclamation project path that worked so well for them with Sam Darnold in 2024. Tua Tagovailoa and Kyler Murray could be ideas, just not on their current contracts. Jones—who, like Darnold, would be coming from San Francisco—would make a good amount of sense.”

Being traded to Minnesota would entail Jones having to compete with young signal caller J.J. McCarthy for the starting job. After McCarthy struggled to stay on the field in 2025, the former Alabama star would have a legitimate chance to win playing time.

It’s just an idea at this point in time, but the Vikings would make a lot of sense for Jones. He could also end up sticking with San Francisco as insurance in case Purdy gets hurt again next year.

Taking a Look Back at Jones’ Career at Alabama

While Jones has been gone from the Crimson Tide since the 2020 season, fans still continue to root him on. He made a lasting impact during his time at Alabama.

In the three seasons that he played for the Crimson Tide, Jones showed steady growth. He completed 74.3 percent of his passes for 6,126 yards, 56 touchdowns, and just seven interceptions.

During his final season at Alabama in 2020, Jones produced the majority of his college numbers. He threw for 4,500 yards, 41 touchdowns, and four interceptions, while completing 77.4 percent of his passes.

Not only did Jones have a great season in his final year with the Crimson Tide from an individual standpoint, he also led the program to a national championship win over Ohio State. That capped off his college career perfectly.

Following that championship win, Jones was drafted No. 15 overall by the Patriots in the 2021 NFL Draft. His career hasn’t gone as planned, but it’s good to see him back on track.
