Bryce Underwood’s parents, Jay and Beverly, got an up-close look at the Michigan quarterback’s rise to stardom. Bryce is from Detroit, Mich., where he was a standout five-star recruit at nearby Belleville High School.
Donovan Dooley, Bryce’s longtime quarterback coach, labels the 6-foot-4, 228-pound signal-caller a “unicorn.”
“So right now what you’re looking at is a unicorn,” Donovan told 247 Sports’ Alejandro Zuniga during a November 22, 2024, interview. “You’re looking at a one-of-one.”
Bryce’s unicorn status as an elite freshman quarterback has a lot to do with the star’s family.

Donovan credits Bryce’s parents for laying a foundation that prompted the quarterback to stay in Detroit rather than fleeing to one of the national high school football factories. Despite an earlier commitment to LSU, Bryce ultimately decided to stay close to home by signing with Michigan.
“I can’t wait for him to be a continuous learner for the coaching staff there to pour into him,” Donovan told 247Sports. “And I’m just a part of his journey. His family has done a heck of a job by keeping him grounded.
“His father, Jay Underwood and (mother) Beverly and his sister, just a close-knit family. They’ve done a heck of a job by managing the process. He’s definitely kept the main thing the main thing,” Donovan continued.
“Because he easily went out to IMG (Academy) or whatever. He chose to stay home. And guess what? He did it again. He did it again.”

Bryce landed a historic NIL deal with Michigan projected to top at least $10 million. The quarterback is already using some of his NIL connections to take care of his parents.
Through a partnership with Feldman Chevrolet, Bryce along with his parents all appeared to drive away from the dealership with new vehicles. Back in January, Bryce posted a video of the exciting news to his Instagram page.
Bryce’s dad opted for a Chevrolet Silverado High Country, while his mom was also shown in a vehicle, but the model was not revealed. In case you are wondering, Bryce did not do so bad himself snagging a 2025 Chevy Tahoe.

Bryce and his family may be reaping the rewards of his success, but there has been a lot of hard work behind the scenes. During a May 2024, interview with the Boys and Girls Clubs of Southeastern Michigan, Bryce’s mother Beverly provided an inside glimpse of raising a five-star quarterback.
“So, as far as the sacrifice with having a five-star recruit son, it’s just having my husband (helping),” Beverly explained. “He’s definitely a big part of why Bryce is the way he is. He has Bryce (working) day in and day out.
“… I have to take on certain jobs or not (do) certain jobs in order to be there for my family and my son. So not take vacations when I want to because of a camp or things that they need to do,” Beverly added.
“So, it’s just endless work. Everybody sees the glory of it all, but they don’t see the hard work that it takes for him to be the way that he is.”
