The PGA Tour announced Monday the cancellation of the Hawaii Swing. This means the end of The Sentry Tournament of Champions at Kapalua and The Sony Open at Oahu. This is the first time in 56 years the PGA Tour will not be in Hawaii.
These changes come amid a flurry of upcoming changes to the PGA Tour schedule in 2027.
The PGA Tour cancelled The Sentry this last January because of a drought throughout the island of Maui. The grass on the course was dying due to a dated water system.
The Sony Open entered 2026 in the final year of its sponsorship. The tournament works towards becoming a spot for the Champions Tour in the future.
The Brian Rolapp PGA Tour Begins

The PGA Tour released a statement about the development:
“We are grateful to The Plantation Course at Kapalua, Kapalua Resort, Maui County and the state of Hawaii for their longtime support of our season-opening PGA Tour event, as well as the fans, partners and volunteers across Maui who have supported the event throughout the years.”
More details about the future of the 2027 schedule have yet to come, but this is the first step of many. When new PGA Commissioner Brian Rolapp took his position, he promised a slew of changes to the PGA Tour schedule as a means to create scarcity.
The Sentry signed as a sponsor in 2018, and its contract finishes in 2035, meaning it will find a new home in the upcoming schedule. The assumption is that place will be Torrey Pines. Stephanie Smith, chief marketing and brand officer for The Sentry addressed their relationship with Kapalua.
She said, “We have said from the beginning, we love Maui and Maui is a Sentry community not unlike our hometown of Stevens Point, Wisconsin. We cherish the friends and partnerships we have formed over the past several years. Our commitment to the island runs deep, and we remain committed to being active in the community.”
The PGA Tour has not announced its schedule yet for 2027; however, The American Express announced they will continue their tournament. Its dates are January 21st to 24th of next year. Rolapp has stated that the new schedule will be kicked off at a premier course on the West Coast.

Expect the next major update for the 2027 schedule to come at the Traveler’s Championship in June. The main reasons for these changes are to get the PGA Tour in bigger markets and to create more high profile events. That means bigger fields with all of the best players more consistently.
Sadly, the Hawaii Swing is now over. After being a host for over fifty years, the Tour looks to move forward with its plan to create a premier PGA Tour schedule. While this change has been largely expected, moving forward there remain plenty of unknowns with the new schedule.
