The American Ryder Cup team desperately needs a win after embarrassing itself on home soil at Bethpage Black last year, but all it’s received since then is more bad news. Ahead of the 2027 Ryder Cup at Adare Manor, Team Europe deployed a power move that should have Team USA shaking in its boots.
In a rare move, the Europeans have decided to triple down on their Ryder Cup strategy, officially naming Luke Donald team captain for the third consecutive time. The Englishman, who led his team to victories in 2023 and 2025 with a combined score of 31.5-24.5, will look to become the first European captain to win three Ryder Cup titles.
Based on how Donald’s first two stints went, Team USA is in trouble again in 2027.
Team Europe Tabs Luke Donald as Ryder Cup Captain
After dominating the Americans in Rome in 2023 and pulling off the road upset in New York in 2025, Team Europe is running it back for a third time. On Wednesday, the Europeans named Donald as the team captain for the third consecutive Ryder Cup. If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it, right?
“The last two Ryder Cups have meant a lot to me and my family. I didn’t imagine this third time would come,” Donald said via the Ryder Cup website. “Celebrating on that Sunday night in New York after a pressure packed week in a tough environment, I thought maybe my job was done – but maybe there is a little more story to tell.
“This Ryder Cup captaincy journey has given me so much focus, so much purpose and it is something I don’t take for granted. It’s a real privilege and I am certainly looking forward to another home Ryder Cup.”
Donald’s impressive Ryder Cup history, ability to build team camaraderie and willingness to use analytics to his advantage were key factors in the decision to bring him back for a third tournament. The former No. 1 player in the world went 4-0 as a player and is 2-0 as the captain in his Ryder Cup career.
“Luke was an outstanding captain in Rome and New York, leading the team to victory both times, and it is fantastic he is coming back to do it a third time,” Guy Kinnings, Chief Executive of the European Tour Group, said in a statement via the Ryder Cup website. “Those victories were remarkable, but almost even more impressive was how he led the team and how he conducted himself. He has faced a lot of challenges as captain throughout his two terms, and he has handled all of them with his usual calm, poise and authority and above all with respect.”
Thanks to Donald, the Europeans will be brimming with confidence as they head to Adare Manor in 2027. The same can’t be said about the Americans.
Can Tiger Woods Help Team USA Spoil a European Three-Peat?

Team Europe naming Donald the captain for a third time puts pressure on Team USA to match him with a strong captain of its own. Obviously, the first name that comes to mind is Tiger Woods.
Last month, Woods revealed that the PGA of America approached him about his interest in the Ryder Cup captaincy in 2027, but he hasn’t made a decision yet. The golf legend has been hesitant to take the job in recent years due to his busy schedule. After an embarrassing showing at Bethpage Black, though, the Americans need to pull out all the stops to bring the trophy back to the U.S.
