There are few college basketball coaches more legendary than longtime Indiana Hoosiers lead man Bob Knight.

Known for his aggressive personalist and quick temper, Knight was also one of the best head coaches in college basketball history. His name will never be forgotten in Indiana.

With that being said, the Hoosiers have made a massive announcement about Knight.

As shared by ESPN’s Pete Thamel, Indiana has announced that the school will be honoring Knight with a bronze statue.

“Indiana announces plans for a permanent bronze statue of Hall of Fame Coach Bob Knight. The statue will be displayed alongside the 1976 National Championship statues in the south lobby of Simon Skjodt Assembly Hall,” Thamel wrote in a post on X.

Looking Back at Bob Knight’s Tenure With the Indiana Hoosiers

Knight was the head coach at Indiana from the 1971-72 season through 1999-2000. During that time period, he led the program to an impressive 662-239 record. That record is good for a 73.5 winning percentage.

In addition to his overall success, Knight won three national championships as the head coach of the Hoosiers.

He started his career at Army and coaching that program for six seasons, compiling a 102-50 record. After his departure from Indiana, Knight coached at Texas Tech for six year. With the Red Raiders, he went 138-82.

Everywhere Knight went, he found success. He was truly a one-of-a-kind head coach. While he was very aggressive in his coaching style, he got the most out of his team.

Throughout his entire career, Knight went 902-371. Those wins place him No. 14 among all head coaches in college basketball history.

Also of note, Knight was Team USA’s head coach during their gold medal run during the 1984 Summer Olympcis. He also coached Team USA to a gold medal at the 1979 Pan American Games.

Indiana Has Become a Spotlight of College Sports

For many years, the Indiana basketball program was the main sport of relevance for the Hoosiers. However, this past season, Curt Cignetti led Indiana to a football national championship win.

Following up that championship win by announcing a statue for Knight is epic. Big things are happening for the Hoosiers and the momentum isn’t slowing down yet.

So far this season under first-year head coach Darian DeVries, the Indiana basketball program has gone 16-8. The Hoosiers could be a potential tournament team for March Madness, although they’ll likely to have fare very well in the Big Ten Tournament to get there.

All of that being said, it’s about time that Knight receives an honor from Indiana. Fans will enjoy seeing the statue unveiled and it will further solidify Knight’s legacy with the Hoosiers.
