Mike Florio has warned that Mike Vrabel’s Patriots job is at risk if new Dianna Russini photos surface.

NFL insider Mike Florio warned Monday that Mike Vrabel’s Patriots job is at risk if any new Dianna Russini photos surface, raising serious questions about the direction of the New England franchise.

Vrabel has already missed time from team activities to seek counseling as the scandal surrounding his relationship with the NFL reporter has expanded well beyond the original Sedona photographs. The warning follows mounting scrutiny around the photos, and a growing belief inside NFL circles that one more development could force a decision.

Florio’s Warning About Vrabel’s Patriots Future

Florio made the comments during a conversation with Philadelphia sports radio personality Howard Eskin, in a clip that circulated widely on social media. The Patriots’ situation, Florio said, is one news cycle from becoming unmanageable.

“We’re one news cycle away potentially, at any given moment, from him not being able to coach the team this year,” Florio said, according to Eskin’s post of the conversation.

Florio pointed to one scenario as the potential tipping point — Russini going public with her own account.

“What if she tells her story to the Today show or 60 Minutes?” he said. “Is that the tipping point where Mike Vrabel can’t coach the Patriots this year?”

He also singled out the organization’s crisis response as a compounding problem.

“This is the product of horrible PR management,” Florio said in the interview with Eskin. “They will be studied in universities for decades to come for what not to do when faced with a PR crisis.”

The Russini Scandal and Its Implications for the Patriots

The controversy broke April 7 when Page Six published exclusive photographs showing Vrabel and Russini together at the Ambiente resort in Sedona, Arizona, a boutique property charging up to $2,160 a night for private bungalows. Both were married to other people.

Vrabel called the images “a completely innocent interaction.” Russini, then, senior NFL insider at The Athletic, said the photos lacked context and reflected a group gathering. The Athletic launched an internal review. Russini resigned before it concluded.

In her exit statement, Russini wrote that she had “no interest in submitting to a public inquiry that has already caused far more damage than I am willing to accept,” according to The Atlantic‘s Jemele Hill.

Vrabel subsequently told reporters he had engaged in “difficult conversations” with family, staff, and players, framing the matter as private. Days later, a second set of photographs, showing the pair kissing and holding hands at a New York bar in 2020, when Vrabel coached the Tennessee Titans, became public.

Can the New England Patriots Sustain the Distraction?

Florio raised a structural concern about how any head coach can manage a consuming professional role while navigating an intensely public personal crisis. He drew a parallel to Tom Brady’s 10-day absence during Tampa Bay’s 2022 training camp, warning that such disruptions create competitive disadvantages and locker-room uncertainty.

Hill, writing for The Atlantic, argued that Vrabel — who built his public identity around accountability — now faces a credibility gap.

“There’s a gap between what he said when he was being praised and what he’s done under fire,” Hill wrote.

The NFL declined to investigate Vrabel’s conduct. Whether the Patriots can contain the story before training camp, Florio suggested, depends on what comes next.
