The Atlanta Braves are currently fighting for playoff positioning in the National League, with the team trying to go for a first-round bye.
Atlanta is currently holding a record of 75-53 on the season, sitting in first place within the NL East. The Braves are giving games up on the Philadelphia Phillies for the division lead, giving them some cushion to work with.
But this team still has plenty of work to do before the season ends. And with the final stretch coming up, Atlanta will need to make sure that they take care of business.
Like many teams across the baseball landscape, the Braves could elect to call up some players from the minor leagues when the rosters expand on Sept. 1. This gives teams a potential boost, while offering prospects the chance to get needed reps at the big league level.
Braves Could Bolster Roster With September Call-Up
According to analysts Jonathan Mayo, Jim Callis, and Sam Dykstra of MLB.com, the Braves could elect to call up a speedster to help with the playoff chase. This would be outfield prospect Patrick Clohisy, who is currently ranked as the No. 16 player in the Atlanta farm system.
“Sometimes you want to reward a guy for turning himself into a prospect and for the year he’s had, and in this case, he could really have value for a playoff-bound team. Clohisy was an 11th-round senior sign in 2024 who put his name on the map for stealing 79 bats in his first full season. He’s swiped 54 more this year, but has become a more complete player, with a .300/.377/.481 line with 42 extra-base hits in 100 games across Double- and Triple-A. His speed and above-average outfield defense alone could come in handy down the stretch for the Braves.”
Clohisy could be an interesting player for the Braves to consider bringing to the big leagues for the stretch run of the season. So far this year, the outfielder has split time between Double-A and Triple-A.
In Triple-A, he has hit .374 with three home runs and 16 RBIs, while posting an OPS of .986. Clohisy has swiped 19 bases in 33 games at Triple-A this year, and he has 56 total between the two stops.
Should Atlanta Call Up Patrick Clohisy?
Adding someone with speed like Clohisy could be beneficial for a team like Atlanta, which is in a tight race. Clohisy could give this team more options to work with over the final month, providing more for manager Walt Weiss to work with.
Down the stretch, and potentially into the playoffs, speed kills. Having guys who can change a game on the basepaths can offer the Braves an edge over opponents when the games get tighter.
Clohisy could give the Braves another left-handed hitting option for the lineup, as well as a strong defensive substitution option. Overall, adding him to the roster when the roster expands could be beneficial for Atlanta.
If the Braves want Clohisy, or any prospect, to be eligible for postseason play, they will need to be added to the 40-man roster before Sept. 1. So the clock is ticking on this team to make the move, and it could end up being one that helps propel them moving forward.
