Before today, the Boston Red Sox had made no free agency signings, but ESPN’s Jeff Passan announced that Boston has agreed on a five-year, $130 million deal with top starter Ranger Suárez, which is a good start, but more needs to be done.

Just because Boston has made this big splash doesn’t mean the Red Sox should stop signing free agents, and the Atlanta Braves have a current free agent in Marcell Ozuna that might be worth acquiring. Ozuna is coming off a down season, but still hit 21 home runs in 2025. Atlanta doesn’t appear to be in the running for Ozuna at the moment, with all of their offseason additions to this point, which makes the Red Sox a potential frontrunner to land the “Big Bear”.

Why the Red Sox Are A Good Fit for Marcell Ozuna.

The Red Sox would be a good fit for the Red Sox for many reasons. First off, Boston is considered to have a slight need at the DH position, as Triston Casas is expected to slot in as Boston’s extra hitter next season, but he’s unproven, and coming off a season where he missed pretty much the entire year.

The second reason is that Marcell Ozuna rakes in Fenway Park, which is certainly friendly for right-handed hitters.

Since 2020, Marcell Ozuna’s stats while playing at Fenway Park are (via StatMuse.com): 13 games, seven home runs, 17 RBIs, 13 hits, and 11 runs scored.

Those are not bad numbers, and that should lead to Red Sox GM Craig Breslow making Marcell Ozuna a lucrative-ish offer.

What is Marcell Ozuna’s Value Now + His 2026 Projected Stats

Looking at Marcell Ozuna’s projected 2026 stats first, BaseballReference.com predicts Ozuna will have this stat line in 2026: 489 ABs, 23 doubles, 27 home runs, and a slash line of .352/.474/.826.

Those are great projected numbers for a 35-year-old Ozuna, but there might have been some disconnect between Atlanta and Ozuna at the end of last season. However, as mentioned, the Big Bear still hit 21 home runs, drove in 68 runs, and posted an OPS+ of 113 over 145 games, although some of those game appearances came from the bench.

As for his projected market value right now, Spotrac projects him to land a two-year deal worth $27 million at a $13.5 million AAV mark.

Teams may not want to commit to Ozuna past a year, so it’s also likely he lands a one-year deal in that $10-13 million range.

Either way, Ozuna is just one-year removed from being a 39-home run slugger, and he pumped 40 home runs back in 2023.

There had also been reports and rumors throughout the season that Ozuna had been dealing with a nagging injury throughout the season.

Look out for the Boston Red Sox as a primary target in the Marcell Ozuna sweepstakes.
