The Boston Red Sox have continued their turnaround in the 2026 season without a top bullpen pitcher. Right-hander Garrett Whitlock has been on the 15-day injured list since Aug. 13 while battling right elbow soreness.
Whitlock, 30, is eyeing a return to the mound before the end of the regular season.
A new update on Whitlock ahead of Boston’s three-game series against the Miami Marlins. He will throw a live batting practice at LoanDepot Park ahead of the series finale on Wednesday, Christopher Smith of MassLive.com wrote.
“See how that goes and how he feels and if we’re able to activate him after that,” said Red Sox manager Chad Tracy. “Obviously getting out on the field and facing some hitters, even if it’s not a rehab game, is important. So he’ll do that Wednesday.”

Garrett Whitlock has been sidelined since Aug. 13 after discovering elbow soreness in his throwing arm. The injury could have stemmed from Boston’s usage of the relief man.
Whitlock appeared in 11 games over a 25-game span for the Red Sox. His success contributed to a 18-3 record from the start of the second half on July 17 to Aug. 7.
The 30-year-old leads the team in holds (21) this season. He also carries a 6-1 record, 2.05 ERA, and 0.89 WHIP over 44.0 innings pitched this season. If all things go well, Whitlock could be activated from the injured list as early as Friday, Christopher Smith added.
Roman Anthony, Trevor Story, and Isiah Kiner-Falefa to Resume Rehab Stint on Tuesday

Heading into the new week of the regular season, Garrett Whitlock wasn’t the only positive injury news the Red Sox received.
Roman Anthony (hand), Trevor Story (hernia), and Isiah Kiner-Falefa (forearm) will resume their rehab assignments in Triple-A Worcester on Tuesday.
Anthony, 22, has been sidelined since May 4 after discovering ligament and tendon issues in his right ring finger. The setback has limited the former top prospect to just 30 games played in 2026. He’s batting .229/.354/.321 with one home run and five RBIs on the season.
Story, 33, has been out for over three months while recovering from sports hernia surgery. He is the closest to returning to the Red Sox out of him, Anthony, and Kiner-Falefa. The story will be re-evaluated after the rehab game on Tuesday, before Boston decides whether he is ready to join the team on Wednesday or Thursday.
Kiner-Falefa, 31, is making a return from left forearm inflammation. He’s been out of the Red Sox’s lineup since suffering the injury on June 19. Roman Anthony and Kiner-Falefa are not expected to make their returns to the big leagues following the Tuesday game, said Christopher Smith.
