The Red Sox have been named a potential landing spot for J.T. Realmuto

All eyes are now on the Boston Red Sox. After losing star infielder Alex Bregman to the Chicago Cubs in free agency, the Red Sox are expected to be aggressive as the winter carries on. There is no question that they should be looking to upgrade their roster as they aim to build off their strong 2025 season.

The Red Sox have made a handful of additions so far this offseason. They notably acquired star slugger Willson Contreras from the St. Louis Cardinals in a big move. They also brought in veteran starting pitcher Sonny Gray from the Cardinals in a previous trade and acquired Johan Oviedo from the Pittsburgh Pirates. Yet, when looking at the Red Sox’s roster, it is clear that they should not be done yet.

Adding another star infielder should be the Red Sox’s biggest priority this offseason. They have been heavily linked to Bo Bichette, and that should only continue to be the case now that they have officially missed out on Bregman.

However, based on a new report, Bichette is not the only notable free agent the Red Sox are being linked to right now.

Red Sox Named Potential Landing Spot for All-Star Catcher J.T. Realmuto

In a recent article for MLB.com, Anthony Castrovince took a look at potential fits for each top remaining free agent. Among the players discussed was All-Star catcher J.T. Realmuto, and it is understandable when noting that he is one of the best players unsigned.

Castrovince first named the Philadelphia Phillies as a potential landing spot for Realmuto, which makes sense when noting that the veteran catcher has been a big part of their roster for seven seasons. However, Castrovince then argued that the Red Sox could be a good landing spot for Realmuto if he does not return to the Phillies.

“Were Realmuto to really leave, the Red Sox would be an attractive destination for a catcher accustomed to annual contention,” Castrovince wrote. “Realmuto’s presence and leadership might prove attractive to a win-now team with a lot of youth elsewhere in the lineup.”

When looking at the Red Sox’s roster, there is no question that Realmuto would have the potential to be an excellent addition for them. He would undoubtedly upgrade Boston’s catcher position if signed due to his strong all-around play, and he would also give them another veteran to work with as they look to be among the top teams in the league.

Realmuto is coming off another solid season with the Phillies, too. In 134 games in 2025, the three-time All-Star had 12 home runs, 52 RBIs, and a .257 batting average. He has also had four seasons with at least 20 home runs, so he would have the potential to give Boston’s offense a bit of a boost if signed.

Red Sox Need to Make a Big Move Now

Whether it’s Realmuto or a different top free agent, there is no question that the Red Sox are in need of another big move. After losing Bregman, the Red Sox must respond if they hope to continue to trend in the right direction as contenders.

On paper, Realmuto looks like he could be a strong fit on the Red Sox. Time will tell if Boston ends up being the lucky club that lands him from here.
