Ahead of Sunday’s game, Ian Browne of MLB.com reported the latest update on Curtis Mead.
He had been out since July 27 with an injury.
Browne wrote: “Curtis Mead will get a scan tomorrow to see how much his fractured left wrist has improved.”
Mead had been traded to the Red Sox (via the Washington Nationals) earlier this season.
He only appeared in one game for Boston before the injury.
ESPN’s Buster Olney wrote (on July 26): “The price that the Red Sox paid for Curtis Mead seems excessive — Connelly Early has less than a year of service time, and looks like he’ll be a really good starter for a long time. But keep in mind that starting pitching is generally plentiful in this trade market, while good RH hitting is scarce. A premium was paid for Mead, who is having his best season.”

Mead had spent the first two seasons of his MLB career with the Tampa Bay Rays.
He then had quick stints with the Chicago White Sox (and Nationals).
Before getting injured, the 25-year-old had been batting .253 with 72 hits, 17 home runs, 48 RBIs, 49 runs and six stolen bases in 88 games this year.
Chris Cotillo of MassLive wrote (on August 21): “Curtis Mead is back in Boston after being away from the team while his wife gave birth. He’s in a cast still and playing catch (with someone else catching for him) in right field.”

After Sunday’s game with the Giants, the Red Sox will head on the road for a series with the Miami Marlins that starts on Monday night in Florida.
